His response was instant.

Sunshine, I’ll come right now if you want me to.

I bit my lip, sorely tempted. But I’d gone into this so fast the first time, only to get burned.

This time, things were going to be different. We were going to take this at a normal pace. Perhaps that way my heart would be better protected.

I replied to say I’d see him in the morning, my heart swelling at his immediate message wishing me sweet dreams.

Who was I kidding? We could move at a glacial pace, or never even take another step together.

It wouldn’t matter. Sebastian already owned my heart.

I just had to pray he wouldn’t break it.

Again.

Chapter 31

Sebastian

Iwas outside Matty’s front door, supplies in hand, a whole hour before I was due. I wasn’t going to make my presence known until eight o’clock, but I couldn’t resist being a little closer to him while I waited.

I’d wanted to spend the night outside his flat, on my preferred rooftop, but Matty’s comment about me looking like crap, while endearing, had been a reminder that I should probably take care of some things I’d long been neglecting.

Toby had given me the keys to his place on the flight over, telling me to treat it as my own.

“Where are you going to be?” Understanding dawned as Toby blushed. “Ahh. I see. You and the mage have stopped being melodramatic then?”

Both Dagon’s and Leo’s heads swivelled around at my question.

Toby crossed his arms with a scowl. “I’m not at liberty to say. Like I said, this is about you and Matty.”

“We can multitask,” Dagon drawled, putting an ankle on his knee. “I’m particularly good at it. You kinda have to be with two mates.”

Toby had refused to budge though, which didn’t surprise me. Even before I’d pushed him away, he’d preferred to keep his cards close to his chest.

For the first time in centuries, I found myself hoping Toby had found happiness. Or, at the very least, was on his way there. He hadn’t been lonely in the same way that I had, but he hadn’t had a person to call his own for a very long time.

Perhaps Blaise would be it for him, the way Matty was for me.

After putting myself back to rights in Toby’s flat, I hit up the nearest twenty-four-hour supermarket for supplies.

It’d been so hard to not break into Matty’s flat overnight. Knowing he was reading my replies and reopening old wounds had me tearing my hair out. I wanted to be there to comfort him. To wipe away his tears and reaffirm everything I’d written about my regrets. To reassure him I wouldn’t ever hurt him again.

But that wasn’t what Matty wanted. I’d meant it when I said I’d respect his decisions.

Instead, I focused on the other thing he’d asked of me—to prove with actions instead of words that I was here to stay. I had several things in mind, but the first involved the bag I had in my hand.

I stared at my watch, willing the second hand to move faster. I knocked on the door the moment it hit the twelve.

When Matty opened the door, something in me calmed. He was bare footed, in joggers and a comfy baggy T-shirt.

He looked so snuggly, it made me want to cuddle him up.

Like the night before though, there wasn’t a speck of makeup on his face. Was Leo right? How much of himself had Matty lost when I’d pushed him away?

“You came.” There was no smile. Another intrinsic part of Matty was missing.
