Danny’s brows shot up. “Umm, yeah. You got it all.”

Chucking it on the floor, I hastened over to Matty. His knees were pulled up to his chest, his face tucked behind them. He was rocking slowly on the bench, like he was afraid he’d fall apart if he stayed still.

Goosebumps covered his pale skin. The bastards had removed everything except his underwear. Knowing what he’d been through before, I could only imagine what a dark place this was putting him in.

Matty couldn’t shine in the dark. The shadows needed to be forced back so he could be bright again.

I barked an order at Danny over my shoulder. “Get something to cover him with.”

His footsteps faded away and I knelt in front of Matty.

“Hey, sunshine,” I said quietly. “Keep your eyes closed still. A couple more minutes and we’ll be out of here.”

Matty didn’t say a word, but his head moved ever so slightly up and down.

Danny reappeared wearing joggers that were at least a size too small.

“What?” he said indignantly when I raised my eyebrows at them. “They’re all I could find. Here, I got this blanket for Matty.”

He went to settle it around his shoulders, but I snatched it from him, baring my fangs in his direction. “I’ll do it.”

Danny smirked, raising his hands. “He’s all yours.”

His choice of phrase unsettled me as I wrapped the blanket around Matty’s shaking shoulders. He wasn’t mine. And he never would be. What he’d been through today was horrific enough—there was no way I was exposing him to my world on a permanent basis.

Lifting him carefully into my arms, I tucked him tight to my chest. The all-consuming fear I’d felt since I’d answered his call was finally beginning to dissipate.

“What about this one?” Danny said, kicking the inert Isaac in the ribs. “Want me to take care of it?”

I shook my head sharply. “I’ll be back for him in a second.”

Once Matty was safely tucked in my car, I’d leave Danny with him while I disposed of Isaac. He’d earned some one-on-one time with me.

I didn’t want Matty in the same room while I did it. What he’d already heard would have scarred him.

And that was child’s play compared to what I was about to do to the wolf who’d dared hold a gun to Matty’s head.

We’d made it almost to the door, when one of the bodies sat up with a groan.

“What the fu-”

Danny grabbed him by the throat, lifting him from the floor. “Hello, Thomas. I see you haven’t developed any common sense in the century since he saw you last.”

Matty stiffened in my arms, the shaking intensifying. “Thomas? But he was dead…Isaac killed him.”

I curled Matty closer, twisting my body so he couldn’t see Thomas. “Who is he, sunshine? What did he do to you?”

Matty’s lips were bloodless. “He…”

The shaking was endless now, like Matty was coming apart at the seams. He opened his mouth to speak a few times, but when he couldn’t get the words out, he simply lifted his injured hand.

My vision went white as I saw the broken and twisted mass of flesh.

“Did he… Is he the one that did that to you, sunshine?”

If Matty thought it odd that I’d slipped into a French accent, he didn’t say anything. Just nodded mutely as he tucked his mangled appendage beneath the blanket once more.

Rage was pulsing through me again as I glanced over my shoulder. Danny had his hand raised, half-shifted and ready to remove Thomas’s throat.
