After dinner he sits on my lap to open his presents, dressed in white skinny jeans and a pink cropped sweatshirt that falls off of one shoulder, and of course, his hat. He oohs and ahhs as he unwraps everything, gushing over it all and thanking everyone profusely.

He frowns when he’s finished and looks at me. “Nothing from you?” he asks, batting his long eyelashes at me. He looks so utterly disappointed I have to try not to laugh.

My heart beats wildly as I reach in my pocket and pull out the ring, showing it to him. He covers his mouth with his hands, and tears spring to his eyes as he looks from it to me, then back again. Then he’s fanning his face and his chest rises and falls as he repeats, “Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god.” He covers his mouth again and then wraps his arms around my neck and kisses me.

When he pulls away he’s still crying, and he rests his forehead against mine, taking a deep breath.

Everyone around us is smiling and Gwen is crying.

“Sebastian,” I say, running my fingers through his hair, “there’s something I need to ask you.”

Our wedding is six months later and there are lilies everywhere.

The End
