“Will you buy me cake?”
He laughs down at me. “Yeah, I’ll buy you a cake.” He kisses me on my head again and then releases me, taking my hand and pulling me along to the coffee shop just as we walk in. I get another boot to the ribs, which makes me gasp and double over, resting my hands on my knees and taking a few deep breaths.
“Shit, Skye, you okay? Is the baby okay?”
I stand up, straightening my back. “Yeah, he’s trying out for the NFL today!” I grimace and rub my stomach. “Wanna feel?”
“Can I?”
I nod, and he tentatively moves his hand towards my stomach. I thought Tank had big hands, but Steels are on another level. I take his hand and pull it towards my stomach, and we wait, nothing. “Give him a… oof.” Steel laughs, and he kicks again. “He likes it when his daddy laughs, too.”
Steel grins down at me. “That’s the first time I’ve ever felt anything like that.” He pulls me in and hugs me, and when I pull back, his eyes shine with unshed tears, and I frown at him.
“What's wrong?”
“If I don’t get her back, I’ll never have a chance to be a dad. She’s my everything… I can’t live in a world without her.” He pulls me tighter again, and I just hug him back as I truly know how he feels.
Viking
I’m back at Carmen’s, and she’s been distant, to say the least. She’s barely spoken to me. She claims she’s “busy”, but we both know she’s pissed at me about Ray. Tali is withdrawn, too, and walks around sobbing. She won't talk, and I can't for the life of me get near either one of them. I wonder if being here is just too hard for both of them. I might head back to the club if I can't talk to either of them today… My phone rings, and it’s Ares.
“Hey, Brother!”
“Hey, is Roach with you?” he asks.
“No, he's still out on assignment.”
“What did he tell you?”
“What do you mean?”
“Turns out, when Ray burnt the place to shit, she trapped Roach in the office. Skye says he's not there now, and she and Dane have said not to worry about him. He's getting what he deserves, but we can't find him and don't know where he is. His phone isn’t even ringing.”
“Fuck… how long’s he been missing?”
“We saw him on the footage from the night of the fire, but that's it. He went into the barn and never came out, but we can't get eyes down there. Skye says he's not in there.”
“How the fuck would Skye know?”
“Apparently, when Ray had her step dad down there, she gave her access to the cameras. She said he wasn't down there long, but Dice cant find any footage of him leaving, so we’re assuming Dane’s involved as he also said not to worry about Roach.”
“Fuck. Leave it with me. I will have a word with Carmen and get back to you.”
“Thanks, Brother.”
Fuck… what the hell is going on? I walk into the pool area, and Carmen’s working on her laptop at the table.
“Hey, can we talk?”
Closing the laptop, she looks up at me. “Sure.” Although the warmth seems to have disappeared. I feel like she is done with me.
“Are you done?”
“No, I still have a few hours of work left. I should be finished later, well, for today, anyway.”
“No, I mean with me.” I sit down at the table across from her and look at my hands before looking back at her. “Are you done with me?”
“Viking…”
