“No, we can’t do this,” he panted. “I know you are moving on, but you are still married. I can’t sleep with you knowing that.”

I understood and removed myself from his lap. He told me it was getting late and decided to leave. I was sad but tried to not let it show on my face once he left.

The next couple of days, neither of us texted or called each other. I hope I didn’t mess up our relationship even before it really started. I let my sexual frustrations get the best of me that night.

On day five, Jason finally called me and apologized for not calling me sooner. He told me he was nervous about how we left things and wanted to make sure I wasn’t upset with him. I was so happy to hear from him and told him I was nervous as well, that’s why I hadn’t called him either. We talked for what felt like all day and he promised he would come by to see me soon.

The next day after work, he stopped by my house. I cooked him one of my favorite skillet meals: garlic butter steak and potatoes. We sat at the table to eat in silence. There was still sexual tension between the both of us, but we ignored it.

“I could really get used to this,” he said.

I smiled. “I could too.”

After dinner, we talked about my divorce, and I told him that I hoped by the end of the week, it would be final. I let him know Craig was trying to hold out on signing the papers, hoping I would change my mind, but that would never happen. Then my doorbell rang, and we both looked at the door.

“Are you expecting company?” Jason asked.

“Only you and Darius know where I stay.” I went to the door and checked the peephole to see Craig standing there with flowers.

Annoyed, I opened the door and demanded, “How do you know where I live?”

“I still have friends, you know,” Craig responded. “We can work this out. Just let me in so we can talk.”

I told him no, and he tried to push his way in, but I didn’t have enough time to react.

Jason came from around the door, placed his arm around my waist, and said, “I know you heard her say no. It’s over, man. Leave.”

I felt a rush of relief when Jason made him leave. Craig stormed off and Jason shut the door.

He pulled me close and kissed me. I told him he should spend the night and sleep in the guest room just in case Craig tried to show back up. He agreed and went to get settled in the guest room. I went to my room and took a quick shower, then put on my gray silk short pajama set.

I then went and knocked on the guest room door.

“Come in,” he called. He came out of the bathroom with only his boxers on and his print was showing. It was huge, and I had never seen anything like it before. He got into the bed while I stood at the foot of his bed. He patted for me to sit down next to him, and I obliged.

“Do you need anything before I go to bed?” I asked.

“I’m not a baby, Dawn,” he answered. “If I need anything, I can get it. I can tell you are used to taking care of people, but you don’t have to take care of me. I want to take care of you.”

I smiled at him and got up to leave.

He jumped out the bed and met me at the door. I traced the tattoo on his chest with my right hand while opening the door with my left hand to leave. His skin was warm and so were his lips as he took my hand, kissed it, and then pulled me closer to kiss his lips.

He whispered, “I love you, goodnight.”

I froze.

“I don’t expect you to say it back. I didn’t say it for you to say it back. I really mean it and I know when the time is right for you, you will tell me.”

I went back to my room and thought about what had just happened. He had no idea when I saw him, my panties instantly got wet and when he said those four words, they soaked even more. I haven’t had anyone say that to me in a long time. Craig stopped saying it to me so I stopped saying it to him because I was the only one who would say it first. I don’t think he even realized I stopped saying it. It was then I realized he never said it unless I said it first.

But I can’t believe Jason told me he loves me. We haven’t even become official, and he is already telling me he loves me.

CHAPTER 8

The next morning, I woke up to Jason cooking me breakfast.

“I know I probably freaked you out last night, and I was not trying to. I was just being honest, so I made you breakfast. I need to leave for work. Hopefully we can see each other again soon.” He kissed my forehead and left.
