“It is, indeed,” I tease, showing off my adulting skills like it’s nobody’s business.

Adam’s low chuckle lets me know the guy has changed quite a bit. His rich brown eyes haven’t once wavered from mine since we started talking. He’s smiling broadly and standing close to me. What happened to the quiet, reserved Adam?!

He shakes his head with incredulity.

“You live in Charleston?”

“Yeah, what about you?”

“Me too.”

He’s just as tall and handsome as I remember. No, better. Towering over me, dressed in an impeccably cut charcoal gray suit. Almond-shaped eyes twinkling with excitement. When we were in college, he’d already filled in nicely. But now? Good God.

“On your way to work?” Adam asks, his strong, white teeth biting down on his full bottom lip. And holy shit, that’s sexy.

I clear my throat and respond with a hint of iciness, “Yeah, and I actually need to get going. It was nice seeing you again, Adam.”

“Whoa, not so fast,” he interrupts. “I want to hear everything about what you’ve been up to. Let’s exchange numbers.”

I hesitate for a beat before nodding, and we trade our contact information. I throw Adam a rushed goodbye over my shoulder, and hurry to the trolley stop, pushing away thoughts of my darn blast from the past…

As soon as I exit the cable car, I send an audio message in my group chat with my sister and Meeka.

“You’ll never guess who I bumped into.”

Meeka is the first one to respond. Newborn baby or not, that girl always makes time for a juicy gossip.

‘WHO?!’ she texts back in all caps.

‘Adam!!’ I reply in stride.

‘Swear!!’

‘I swear!!!’ I type back, snickering at the tone of our exchange. In the span of a short text message exchange, we’ve regressed by a solid decade.

Walking toward my practice, my heels clicking on the cobbled pavement, I pick up the phone on the first ring and hold it in front of my face for our group video call. I love how Amal has no time for Meeka and I’s long dragged back-and-forth.

“You lyin’!” My sister yells.

I let out a snort and cover my mouth, looking around to see if anyone caught that, but thankfully San Franciscans are as blase as ever.

“No, I’m not lying. We just met in front of the cafe near my building. And I think he lives here…”

“Oh My God!” Meeka exclaims. “We found Adam!”

We all laugh, then my sister asks, “what about Michael?”

“What about him?” I reply, sobering up.

Meeka cocks her head to the side in her signature ‘don’t be stupid’ face.

“Guys, I just thought it was funny to see him after all this time. In the city where I live. I wanted to share, that’s all. You can’t compare the guy I’ve been seeing for six months to some old crush.”

If they could exchange a knowing look through their phone screens, that’s what would happen right now.

Meeka goes, “uh-huh.”
