“She’s mine,” Barren hisses, turning in my lap and biting my lower lip. “She belongs with us.”

I scowl and stroke his cheeks. “So, what do you want to do?”

He lets go, confused, losing the possessiveness and becoming hesitant again. I miss the cocky, arrogant man he used to be.

“I want to be her friend. I want to be near her. In whatever way that looks.” He says softly, then he stands up and slinks out of the room. We watch him go in silence.

“Well, that answers that.” Jet says happily.

“Does it?” Gold asks quietly, and then he turns away, facing the window. “How do we fix this?”

“There’s nothing we can do. Merry and Art did this. He just needs time. Space. Safety.” Acton says calmly. “He will heal. He is already.”

Jet flinches at the use of our prior pack members’ names.

“Give him what he wants.” Gold says softly. “If it’s her he needs, then so be it, but when her pack comes calling, we have to be ready to pick him up, to protect him.”

“And us? What do we do? Because I feel a pull towards her. I know you guys do, too.” Jet says. “Are we watching from a distance, or are we courting the alpha, too?”

I hesitate. I don’t want my feelings to taint whatever this is just yet. “Do what feels right in the moment.”

Gold’s eyes gleam, and I get just a trace of panic through the bond. “Are you suggesting she become pack?”

I shake my head vehemently. “Absolutely not. That's a much later down the road discussion.” Never, if I can’t sort our lives out. “I’m saying, right now, we do what Barren needs, and we make Scarlet comfortable around us so that he can have that.”

“This is insane.” Gold mutters. “Fine. Fine. For Barren.”

I stand up and leave the room, opening and closing doors until I find my omega curled up on a couch in the dark, staring out the window.

I sit behind him and pull him into my arms. “You’ll get cold sitting here like this all night.”

Barren turns and tucks himself in against me. “You're always worrying about me.”

I touch the tip of his nose and draw a line up until I can comb my fingers through his hair. “It’s my job. And it’s the best job. I got so lucky.” I whisper.

He smiles and snuggles closer. “Do you think she likes me?”

I remember the way she looked, the potent perfume of her scent, the stiff way she fought for control. “Yes, I think she does.”

“Good. I tried to be sorry, tried to hide it, but I can’t. I wish I didn’t, but there is something magic about her.”

“Magic?”

“She’s like moonlight and fairytales.” Barren yawns and curls up tighter.

I smile at the thought. Scarlet Waring; moonlight and fairytales. Strangely, it suits her. I wait half an hour and then carefully lift Barren in my arms, frowning at how much weight he’s lost, and carefully walk us back to Acton’s room, where I deposit him next to the overly large alpha.

“You staying?” He asks.

I look down at Barren and nod. It doesn’t take me long to strip off, and then I’m climbing into bed, wrapped around my omega.

But my mind keeps wandering to moonlight and fairytales.

Scarlet

I sit up and hurl the dildo across the room. It doesn’t make me feel better, so I snatch up one of those orange scented pillows and scream into it. My core aches, my body is ready, my nipples are so hard they could cut glass, and I cannot get myself off. My damn teeth ache. This is hell.
