Lou: Yeah. I’m used to not sleeping for nights at a time.

Henrik: Why?

Lou: Babies . . . they can be pretty demanding. I could say that I don’t recommend it, but honestly they’re worth every sleepless night.

Henrik: Would you want to have more babies?

Lou: Whoa, aren’t we a little ahead of ourselves?

Henrik: It’s just a question, you know.

Lou: Sure, but . . . I mean. I need to have Archie and Tilly first, get used to this new life and then we can discuss it.

Henrik: I’m a patient man, I was just wondering about it.

Lou: Do you want children?

Henrik: With you? Definitely. But let’s talk about this once Archie and Tilly adjust to Kentbury and get to know me.

Lou: Thank you for understanding. I really hope you get to love them.

Henrik: They’re yours, of course I’m going to love them.

Lou: Hey, my break is over. I need to get back to work.

Henrik: At what time do you want me to pick you up so we can head to the festival?

Lou: Nine o’clock works for me. See you then.

Henrik: Until then.

ChapterTwenty-Two

Henrik

Louand I make the rounds at the Love Festival, ensuring all the booths are running smoothly on this crisp, snow-dusted day. Rosy-cheeked and mittened, she practically glows. Who knew that this place would be so crowded and so well received?

“Let me make sure the frosting isn’t freezing over,” she calls over her shoulder, already rushing toward the cookie-decorating station.

I watch her walk away, until my phone buzzes. It’s Ameline Decker and Hunter Everhart, our lawyers. This must be important.

“I have to take this. It’s the lawyers,” I shout to Lou over the crowd.

She nods, brow furrowing slightly, and we both walk in opposite directions.

“Ameline, Hunter, what’s going on?” I ask urgently.

Hunter’s voice crackles through the phone. “We’ve got him, Henrik. The evidence we need against Anthony. We can finally take that bastard down.”

I rake a hand through my hair, pulse racing. “But Louanne just wants full custody of the kids. What exactly do you mean, ‘take him down’?”

Before Hunter can respond, I feel a gentle hand on my back. I turn to see Lou gazing up at me, cheeks rosy but eyes full of concern.

“Is everything okay?” she mouths silently.

I debate what to tell her, but then I recall that technically I don’t know much yet. “It’s about getting custody of your kids. I’ll fill you in soon, I promise.”

“Well, paying a judge to take away the kids from their mother is obviously not legal. But we assumed that if he had that power, he has done it before,” Hunter explains over the line. “My team has been digging into Anthony’s affairs over the past few weeks. It’s taken some time, but we’ve uncovered evidence of some questionable business dealings and a lot of personal indiscretions.”
