Dolly’s head dips back in defeat and tears well up in her eyes as she stares at the ceiling.

Connecting the second wire, her entire body goes taut, twitching and convulsing as the electricity surges through her torso.

I let it continue for ten seconds before breaking the circuit and giving her a moment.

Her body goes limp as she passes out again, and I sigh.

By the time she comes into consciousness, I’ve attached her limbs to a machine on either side of the room.

When the lever is cranked, it increases the tension, resulting in painful extension of the limbs and if you wind the machine enough it will fully dislocate joints.

Hell, it could completely dismember someone.

She glances at me with pure terror, and for a moment, Lara’s face flashes through my mind.

I forcefully shove those haunting images aside, reminding myself that the nightmares from the past that Lara endured and Dolly’s current reality are not the same.

“I would recommend for you to pray to the Gods for forgiveness, but if they banished me for my actions, I wonder if they would even hear your pleas,” I remark, a tinge of bitterness lacing mywords.

She sobs and I crank the lever of the machine attached to her right leg enough for it to be uncomfortable.

As her pleading eyes meet mine, I feel no remorse as I wind the bar twice more and her shrieks resonate in the air.

The next few days aregoing to be fun.

Chapter 45

Lara

A week passes without a word from Caspian, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to let Darian recuperate from his physical and emotional wounds.

Surprisingly, his recovery has been remarkably quick.

Despite the absence of magic on Earth, his body retains a fraction of its resiliency.

We find ourselves immersed in the captivating world of Pompeii, engrossed in every scene unfolding on the screen.

Darian sits upright on the couch, while I nestle into him, using his lap as a pillow. Val sprawls alongside me, his head gracefully draping over my waist, his gaze is fixed on the movie as much as ours are.

Having gone so long without hearing from Caspian, the unexpected chiming of both mine and Darian’s phones startles me.

I tilt my head to meet Darian’s intense gaze that sends shivers down my spine.

Val adjusts himself to make room as I sit up, while Darian leans forward to retrieve his phone. After a long moment of palpable tension, his voice finally breaks the silence.

“It appears we’re making our way back home,” he announces.

A blend of apprehension and exhilaration courses through my veins at the prospect of returning to my house, and seeing Candace and Henry.

We spend the next few hours packing before arriving at the executive airport. As we step onto the tarmac, the familiar sight of Darian’s private jet awaits us.

With ease, Darian lifts both our carry-on bags up the steps of the aircraft and neatly stows them in compartments close to the sleeping area as Val finds a comfortable spot on one of the chairs.

As if on cue, the flight attendant makes her way toward us, the clicking of her heels resonating through the cabin.

“Good morning, Mr. Cathorn and Ms. Ray,” she greets us with a warm smile. “Would you care for a glass of wine or any other beverage?” She clasps her hands together sweetly.

“Pinot, please. Thank you, Heather.” Darian replies for both of us. Heather nods and promptly leaves to get our drinks.
