“This shouldn’t have happened,” he said.

“I’m sorry. I had no idea you’d be flying here in the middle of the night and dealing with this. I called Roger hoping that he’d handle it and no one would know. I’ve never in all my life had something like this happen. Never needed one of my father’s men to take care of something, but I didn’t know what else to do.”

“Why didn’t you call me?” he asked.

She looked at him in the taxi, her eyes filled with tears, and it was the first he’d ever seen this reaction from her.

“I’m so tired. Can we just talk about this once we are home?”

He wouldn’t argue with her even though he wanted to.

They sat in silence to the airport, made their way to Egan waiting and climbed in.

Laine wouldn’t stop apologizing and telling Egan to bill her for this trip. Carson argued to cut it out and he’d handle it.

They both gave up at that point and she shut her eyes and fell asleep with her head on his shoulder and he let her go.

His cousin kept turning his head and smirking at him and then whispered, “You’re so far gone it’s not even funny. Welcome to the club.”

He had no reply for that.

ONE FOR THE BOOKS

Hours later, Laine wasn’t surprised to wake up alone in her bed.

She got home and all but fell face first down on her pillow, Carson climbing in next to her.

He was gone now and it was too much to hope he went home when she heard noises in the kitchen.

She got up and went to the bathroom to shower and found him putting the makings for sandwiches on the counter along with a container of her yogurt.

The minute she saw the food she realized how hungry she was.

She grabbed the sandwich away from him that he’d just put together and took a bite. “Thanks,” she said.

He smirked at her and went back to making one for himself.

“You ready to talk?”

“I wish this were some kind of a dream,” she said. “I need to call my father.”

“I already talked to him,” he said.

She narrowed her eyes at him. “That just ticks me off.”

“I’m sure it does. Maybe as much as I’m ticked you didn’t call him or me directly. Why don’t we start with that? And before you get even madder that I talked to your father I think it was more considerate than to keep him waiting.”

Just another guilt on her shoulders. “You’re right. It was. Where do you want me to start?”

“Anywhere,” he said. “I’m not leaving anytime soon.”

She didn’t think so. She told him about the showing, how she went to get a glass of wine and a snack and switched to club soda. The Persons came over to talk to her and then when Donovan made his way over next.

“I had no idea what he was talking about and when it occurred to me, I laughed.”

“Which probably pissed him off in his drunken state,” he said.
