“She won’t say anything,” he said. “By law she can’t.”

“I think I’ll wait a few weeks to make the appointment.”

“Why?” he asked.

“For a lot of reasons,” she said. “One being to give it time. Two to help keep it a secret. What’s a few weeks? We know. Sometimes people don’t get into the doctor’s right away anyway.”

“True,” he said.

“It’s not like I’m not half living with a doctor.”

He grinned. “Good point.”

“No plans right now,” she said. “We don’t need to make any. Lots of time.”

“Not lots of time,” he argued. “Just nine months or so.”

“Plenty enough. Now let’s eat. I’ve got a baby to feed.”

His hand went to her belly. “Yes, you do.”

NO BLAME

“Why am I not surprised,” Ava said three weeks later, “that you have to have what Hudson has?”

He wasn’t laughing at his sister’s grin and hoped to hell no one thought that. It’s not like this was even his idea. But he hated when he was compared to his brother on top of it.

“Don’t blame, Carson,” Laine said. “It was all me. Blame the paint and wine party if there is any blame.”

“Excuse me?” Ava asked. They were in the exam room together. Laine had waited two weeks to make the appointment and they had another week to wait to get in. “It’s not like anyone was drunk.”

“I’m offended you’d think my child was conceived under those circumstances,” he said. He was grinning this time.

“There is no blame,” Laine said. “But I listened to what great fathers everyone was and knew Carson would be the same. I came home and asked him to give me a baby.”

“What?” Ava said.

His sister was looking at him. “She speaks the truth. Doesn’t Seth give you everything you want?”

Ava shook her head and laughed. “No comment. Guess all I can say is you’ve got some strong little swimmers if you said it then and now you’re pregnant.”

“Good genes,” he said.

“Are you staying for the exam?” Ava asked.

Ava was looking at him and then back to Laine. “It’s not like he hasn’t seen it before. He can stay up here by my shoulders.”

“There is your answer,” he said. He was trying hard to contain his excitement, but he refused to embarrass himself and break out in dance again.

Carson knew that was what won Laine over to take the home test so early. The second time it was just pure excitement without thought.

“Lie back,” Ava said and Laine did as she was told. He moved up by her shoulders and held her hand. Not that he had to, but he wanted to.

“Have you delivered a baby before?” Laine asked him.

He turned his head to look at her. “Yes. During my residency and my stint in the ER.”
