“There isn’t anything different there.”

“But itisdifferent,” she argued.

“Because you are falling in love with Carson?”

She sighed. “I feel like I am. This isn’t supposed to happen so soon.”

“Why not?” Avery asked. “To me that just means he might be the one. The older we get, we can weed people out faster that don’t work. Trust me, I know.”

Avery had been in a long-term relationship and had thought she’d marry the guy until Josie came to live with her. Then Avery’s ex decided he didn’t want to raise someone else’s child. Avery kicked him to the curb, but the jerk wanted to come back when Avery was awarded a large settlement for Josie.

That was when Avery knew it was time to leave her hometown of Danbury, Connecticut, and made the move to Amore Island.

Laine knew what was going on in Avery’s life and secretly hoped it was what her friend needed when the opportunity dropped in her lap at a town meeting over a year ago.

Yes, there was something about the lore and legend of this island.

“I think you’re right. My mother knows everything.”

Laine never kept secrets from her mother. Even her mother encouraged her to tell her father.

Maybe next weekend after the wedding she would.

Though Carson would be staying the night so it’d have to be after he left.

She’d worry about that next week when she talked to her father.

“Then tell your father. You know in your heart what you want. Nothing has ever stopped you before. Why are you worried now?”

She let out a big sigh. “I think he’s too perfect. No one is perfect.”

Avery rolled his eyes. “I doubt he’s perfect. That is you being blinded by love. The honeymoon phase.”

“Right again,” she said. “Let me go check on Josie.”

She walked away and saw Josie sketching on the canvas and the music playing softly and grinned.

“She’s lost in her art right now like I get.”

“Good for her.”

“She has so much talent, Avery. She needs to fly. One of these days I’m not going to be able to help her.”

“It’s not about helping,” Avery said. “It’s about giving her a safe creative space with someone that understands her.”

“I wasn’t going to tell you this, but I feel I should. My agent was here a few months ago and saw one of Josie’s paintings.”

“Oh,” Avery said.

“He would love to represent her.”

“She’s a child,” Avery argued.

“I said that. It’s your decision, but from my experience she needs to grow. The talent she has can’t be matched. Now she’s expanding her knowledge. She’s having fun.”

“And we don’t want to make this a job. It’s not the money,” Avery said. “We don’t need it. Thank you for telling me, but I agree with you. I don’t want to take her childhood away from her and that might do it.”

“It would,” she said. “The meetings, the traveling. The demands on series and more pieces. In the beginning I was fine with it.”
