She hummed in agreement.

“Do I look okay?” she asked. She grabbed her purse and phone, and he walked with her down the steps to the back of the apartments, where the golf cart that he’d used to bring his things over the day before was still sitting.

“You look great.”

She beamed at him. “Thanks. And don’t apologize, I fell asleep too.” She took a drink of coffee. “It was a really nice sleep, actually.”

“Oh?”

“I haven’t slept well since I was laid off. I stress-think too much and can’t turn off the panicky part of my brain that worries about stuff before it happens.”

“Like what if you never found a job?”

“Right, or had to move to Philly with my parents. But I don’t have to worry anymore, because coming to the park was the best thing I could have ever done, and it was entirely a fluke.”

She’d explained that her friend had family cancel plans, so she was stuck with tickets and invited her and Darcy along.

“I’m an introvert for the most part. The me that makes plans is not the same me when it’s time to do the thing, you know? I’m a homebody,” she said.

“I’m kind of in between. I like to be out with my friends, but I like to be home too. I’ll definitely like being a homebody with you around, though.”

“It’s crazy, isn’t it?”

“What?”

“That we might have never met.”

He’d been thinking about that for a while. “Fate’s funny.”

“I’m glad for fate.”

“Me too.”

The brakes squealed a bit as he stopped next to the season ticket office. Joss was walking up with his mate, Jeanie, who was human and worked in the market underground serving food.

“Good timing,” Joss said. “I’m Joss, and this is my wife, Jeanie.”

“I’m Rhomi. Nice to meet you,” she said, extending her hand. “Thanks so much for the job, I’m excited to get started.”

Jeanie kissed Joss on the cheek. “I’ll see you at lunch.”

Joss cleared his throat, his eyes flashing to amber for a heartbeat. “You know it.”

Mercer gave Rhomi’s hand a squeeze. “Can I come pick you up for lunch?”

“I’d love that.”

Joss cleared his throat. “Her break is at noon; I’m sure you can coordinate with the other security staff so you’re relieved.”

“Absolutely. I’m on the patrol team now, so I’ll be around. Have a great morning, Rhomi.”

“Thanks, Mercer, you too.”

She climbed from the golf cart and gave him a meaningful smile.

Damn, he wished they didn’t have to work.

But once he won her heart and was able to tell her the truth of his shifter nature, he could mark her and they could take time off. He couldn’t wait.
