“It’s okay, everything all right?” Mercer asked, grabbing the wolf before he fell backward to the concrete.

“No, that female is gone.”

“What female?” he asked.

“Ginny. The jackal. We went to the apartment and found she’d gotten out through one of the windows.”

“I hope she’s okay,” Rhomi said.

“The park is locked down, so she won’t get far,” Mercer said.

“Hey, you’re okay, Rhomi?” Alfie asked.

Mercer and Rhomi stepped onto the concrete and looked up at him. “I am, thanks.”

“Good. Take care.”

The door to the security office closed and they turned to walk to the employee cafeteria. “Why do you think she ran?” Rhomi asked. “How would she even know that someone had come for her?”

“I don’t know. Maybe she found the article. Or maybe she felt like her time was running out. Either way, one of our people will find her and get her to safety. It’s better for her to be here than out on her own.”

“True. I wouldn’t want to face those jackals by myself.”

He snarled. “I won’t ever let that happen.”

She bumped his shoulder and smiled at him. “I know.” She unlocked the door to the cafeteria and opened it, stepping inside. “I’m feeling better, you know, but I have a favor to ask.”

“Name it.”

“Before we binge-watch anything, let’s have sex. I need a good physical distraction and you’re really, really good at that.”

“I aim to please, trust me.”

She looked serious for a moment. “I do trust you.”

“Good.” He pulled the door shut and walked with her to the hidden stairs. “I won’t leave you alone like that again, I swear.”

The wolves liked to work with their mates. It seemed like this lion was turning out the same way. He’d always hated leaving her at the security office, and now he wasn’t going to be leaving her at all. Hopefully whatever Joss had planned was something that he could be part of because he sure as hell wasn’t interested in letting his sweetheart be in danger again. He’d keep her safe no matter what.

ChapterTwenty-One

August finished tightening the bolt that held the guard station’s security arm in place and blew out a breath. His whole body was strung tight, his gorilla pacing in his mind. He hadn’t felt right for a few days, his beast making noisy demands that he should be somewhere, but he didn’t know where the hell that place was. It wasn’t like his gorilla could actually talk to him or form any sort of coherent thoughts. Everything that came from the beast was just feral instinct, and the problem was that August had no idea what was making his beast so nuts.

He'd been so distracted by his gorilla’s incessant annoyed hooting that he’d stripped two bolts before he finally focused and fixed the arm that lifted and lowered to allow employees to enter the private parking lot.

He rolled his neck with a grunt and dropped the tool into the metal box with a loud clang.

“You okay, man?” Nathan, a fellow gorilla, who worked on the park maintenance crew with him, asked.

“Yeah. No.” August sighed, dropping his head to his chest. “I have no idea.”

Nathan finished connecting the wires to the security bar that had needed to be replaced after they’d noticed some corrosion, and they’d used the opportunity to replace the security bar and clean up the mechanism as well. The only people who came back this way were employees, but occasionally a human coming to the park would get lost and wind up back at the guard shack where they’d be turned around and sent to the right lot.

The park wasn’t open yet, so the shack was empty.

“What’s going on?” Nathan asked. He stood and brushed his hands off on his jeans and leaned on the security arm.

“I don’t know. I haven’t felt right in a few days.” He rubbed the space over his heart as his gorilla hooted in his mind.
