“In four months, the paternity tests will be done, and the whole world will know the truth,” she said. “You’re acting like you can’t break up with him then. Plus, if the tests come back positive, Titan Miller would have to have a lot of nerve not to let you go after lying to you.”

“Yeah, but I already feel like I’m in over my head with Titan,” I pointed out. “In four months…I can’t even begin to imagine how deeply in love I’d be with him by then.”

“Which still wouldn’t prevent you from breaking up with him, Lux,” she countered. “C’mon, you’re not a stupid woman, so quit acting like you wouldn’t be strong enough to walk away if he lied to you.”

“This is such a shitshow,” I sighed, hating how torn up I felt. “I’ve never felt this confused about anything in my life ever.”

“Let me ask you another question.”

I snorted. “Go ahead.”

“If Titan is telling the truth, how are you going to feel, knowing that you didn’t stand by him through all of this?” Her words hit me hard in my chest. “How are you going to feel, knowing that you chose the side of two strangers that have everything to gain by dragging Titan’s name through the mud? Worse? How are you going to feel when he forgives you for not picking his side? Because it’s obvious to everyone that Titan Miller is in love with you, Lux. There’s no way that he won’t forgive you.” She gave me a sympathetic look. “Do you really want to rob him of the ability to say that you’ve always stood by him? When he’s toasting to you on your fortieth wedding anniversary, how are you going to feel when he can’t say that you’ve always stood by him through thick and thin?”

My eyes started to water. “That’s not fair.”

“From everything that you’ve told me, I guarantee you that Titan couldn’t care less about those two women right now,” she went on, showing no mercy. “Whatever he does next, it’s going to be because he doesn’t want to lose you. Those women are secondary for him right now, though they’re the problem.”

“You can’t know that,” I argued.

“No, I can’t,” she agreed. “However, my opinion is based off the things thatyou’vetold me.”

“So, you’re saying that I should just ignore my doubts and trust Titan blindly?”

Lita shook her head. “No, not at all,” she replied. “I’m merely asking you why you believe two women that you’ve never met over a man that spent an entire weekend inside you. I mean, I know you, Lux. You’re not a one-night stand kind of woman. If you slept with Titan, it’s because you were already feeling something for him. So, I just want to know when did those two women’s words begin to mean more to you than what you feel for Titan?”

“I don’t know,” I choked out. “I feel like I don’t know anything.”

“I get not wanting to be humiliated in front of the entire world,” she drawled out. “I do. Seriously. However, Titan Miller would have to be a grade-A douchebag to lie to you like that, and is he? Did you ever get that vibe from him? Because from all accounts, apart from his womanizing, Titan’s always had a good reputation for being a decent guy. Up until these two women popped up, I hadn’t ever heard of him being involved in any scandals, and the man’s been in the public eye for years.”

Everything that Lita was saying had merit, and the more that she spoke, the more that I was beginning to feel like I might have panicked. Instead of trusting Titan, I had chosen to believe the worst because that made more sense to me. Lita had asked me why it was easier to believe Rachel and Aubrey over Titan, and the answer was shamefully easy. It made more sense for Titan to be a liar than for Titan to be seriously interested in an Average Jane like me.

“I’ll…I’ll think about it tonight, and then reach out to him in the morning,” I said. “No matter what, unless he fires me, I’m still his PR agent, and we still need to talk about all this.”

“My advice?” I nodded again. “Do not call him as his PR agent, Lux. It’ll just piss him off more. Call him as his girlfriend and figure it out.”

“What if he decides that he no longer wants me after he’s calm down?”

Her face softened. “Then I guess that solves all your problems.”

The first tear fell. “What the fuck am I doing, Lita?”

“Living life, babe,” she quipped. “And, unfortunately, it’s a messy sonofabitch.”

That got a hollow laugh out of me. “Lucky me.”

Lita scooted over, tangling her arms around me. “It’ll be okay, Lux,” she lied. “No matter what, you’re a tough girl. I have no doubt that you’ll come out okay at the end of all this.”

“God, I wish I had your confidence,” I muttered.

Lita leaned back, grinning at me. “Wanna get drunk?”

“Absolutely,” I answered.

For the next two hours, we drank everything alcoholic in my house, though I really hadn’t had much. I wasn’t a big drinker, and the bottles of wine that Lita had found had been birthday gifts from Opal. I also didn’t care if I went to work hungover tomorrow. Opal would understand after Aubrey’s appearance in our lives this morning.

My only hope was that I could get a hold of Titan tomorrow before he did something stupid. While I could call him tonight, I figured I’d give him some time to get over that slap.
