I would’ve thought that would be me, and maybe it would’ve if Tara hadn’t shown up in my life. She’s taken over my thoughts, made me feel stuff I never felt with Haley. But now I don’t know what to do. I thought I’d be okay with her taking time to figure out stuff with Troy, but last night I lost it. Knowing she was with him after being with me seemed wrong, in so many ways. If that’s how it’s going to be with her, I can’t do it.

“So if you’re over your ex,” Rob says, “then why do you seem so miserable?”

“It’s complicated.”

“Try me.”

I sigh. “I got involved with someone else. A girl I really like. But she’s with another guy and doesn’t want to break up with him. So it’s over with us.”

“And you’re this upset about it? After what…a few dates with her?”

“It’s not like I just met her. We’ve known each other a long time.”

“Wait, are you talking about that girl who was here on Sunday?”

“Yeah, that’s her.”

He nods. “She was hot. Sorry it didn’t work out.” He gets up. “You sure you don’t want to go to lunch? You might meet a girl there.” He smiles.

“No. You go ahead.”

As he’s leaving, I check my phone and see a text from Tara, asking if I’m going over there at noon.

I’m about to text her back that I’m not when I get another text from her that reads,I didn’t go last night.

I call her and she answers on the first ring. “Did you see my text?”

“Yeah. So you didn’t go see Troy?”

“No. I told him the bus broke down and I couldn’t make it.”

I’m glad she didn’t see him, but annoyed at the reason she gave him. Why didn’t she just tell him she didn’t want to see him? Why did she have to make up some excuse?

“Are you still coming over?” she asks. “I could go get us something for lunch.”

“Don’t worry about lunch. I’ll head over there now.”

I grab my keys and go out to my car. As I’m driving there, I keep asking myself why I’m doing this. She hasn’t ended it with Troy, and I get the feeling she’s not planning to anytime soon. So do I tell her we can’t see each other until she does? But I want to see her. It hasn’t even been a day and I miss her like crazy.

My phone rings. It’s Dean calling. He’s been calling me for days and I haven’t picked up. I texted him that I’m busy with school and don’t have time to talk, but I can’t keep putting him off so I decide to answer his call.

“Hey, Dean.”

“Hey, how’s it going? Sounds like you’re busy with school.”

“Yeah, I’m still getting used to it. It’s a lot different than high school.”

“How are your grades?”

“I don’t have any. Classes just started.”

“You’ve probably had a test by now, or a quiz.”

“I had a quiz and I did okay on it. You can’t be asking me about my grades. I’m not a kid anymore. I don’t have to show you my report card.”

“Hey, I’m just making sure you’re doing okay. The first semester can be tough. I didn’t do very good my first semester. So how’s everything else? You hear anything from Haley?”

“No, and I don’t think I will. It’s over between us.”
