“Are you just saying that so I’ll make a decision?”

“No. Well, maybe partly. But it looks good. They all look good.”

She laughed. “I’ll take this one.”

J.T. took out his wallet and gave Maggie his card. “Good choice.”

“I think you’d say that about any of them.”

He checked the time on his phone. “Do we have time to get something to eat?”

“Didn’t we just eat lunch?”

“Dessert, then? Coffee? A beer?”

“Coffee. And maybe some pie.”

Joey wore her new hat out of the store, then took J.T.’s arm as they walked down the sidewalk. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. But like I said, I bought it to save my reputation.”

“Right.”

They arrived at the coffee shop and J.T. opened the door for her. They went inside and took a booth in the back. The sight of them together caused some whispers among the few people they passed.

Joey leaned across the table and lowered her voice. “The gossip is really going to start now. Joey and J.T. getting along after six years and a major scandal.”

“Screw them.”

“You should kiss me. That’d really get them talking.”

He leaned back in his seat. “The next time I kiss you, it’s going to be because I want to kiss you, not because it’ll feed the gossip monster.”

She cocked her head. “So, is there going to be a next time?”

He looked at her for a moment. “I believe there is.”

The waitress came to the table. “Hey guys, what’s this?”

Joey smiled at her. “Hi, Sarah.”

“Are you two back together?”

J.T. sighed. “Can we get two coffees, please?”

“Fine. Don’t tell me. I’ll find out soon enough. Anything else besides the coffee?”

Joey glanced at J.T. “Apple pie à la mode.”

J.T. nodded. “Make that two.”

Sarah left the table and Joey watched her walk away, then looked at J.T. “How are you still single?”

“What do you mean?”

“Every woman in town has the hots for you.”

He started laughing. “I’m sure that’s not true.”
