“Not as sorry as I am. We should get it done today, though.”

Joey smiled. “Will you call me later?”

“Yes, I will.”

She ended the call and laid back down with Finn.

He threw an arm around her. “Can we stay in bed all day today?”

“No. We’ve got lots of work to do.”

“Work?”

“How’d you like to help me paint today?”

Chapter thirty-four

"Are you going to let me in, or what?"

Jake and Jacob parked in front of the White Buffalo. The bar didn’t open for another two hours. But they knew Freddy would be there. The bar was his life. He was always there. They went to the door and found it locked, so Jake knocked.

Freddy opened the door a few moments later and was obviously surprised to see them.

“I don’t open until two.”

Jake nodded. “We know. We just want to talk to you.”

Freddy looked like he wasn’t going to let them in. But then he took a step back and opened the door. He went behind the bar, and Jake and Jacob sat on two barstools.

Freddy leaned on the counter. “Can I get you a drink?”

Jacob shook his head. “No. We want to talk to you about the Bradford property. Or I guess it’s your property now. At least on paper.”

“What about it?”

“J.T. told us you’re having second thoughts about keeping the place.”

Freddy scowled. “Your son needs to mind his own business.”

Jake tried to curb the anger he was feeling. “What happens to Joey and Finn is his business now, whether you like it or not.”

Jacob put a hand on Jake’s arm. “Freddy, we’d like to make you an offer.”

Freddy smiled. “You’ve wanted that land for a while now.”

“Yeah. But we can live without it, so don’t think you can jack up the price. We know what you paid for it. We’ll give you that plus $10,000.00 to cover some of the costs you put into the house.”

“Ten grand won’t come close to covering what I put into that place.”

Jake stood. “Take it or leave it. We’re not going to negotiate with you. The place was on the market a long time before you bought it. You’re not going to find another buyer. At least not one who will match what you paid for it.”

Jacob stood too and studied Freddy for a moment. “Prove to us you’re not the bastard we think you are. Do the right thing for Joey and Finn. She needs that place to make a new start for herself and your grandson. We think she deserves it. Do you?”

When Freddy didn’t answer, they both turned away from him and started walking for the door. As they reached it, Freddy called out to them.

“You’re willing to let Joey stay and open her damn bed-and-breakfast?”

Jake turned back and looked at him. “Yes. Like Dad just said, she needs a place to start over.”
