“His brother, actually. And how he got here.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.Oh.Xander and I are just friends. So stop worrying about it.”
“That’s what he said, too. His exact words were, he didn’t have room in his life for an intriguing woman.”
She looked at J.T. “He did not.”
“I swear. If he didn’t have those five kids, you’d be in trouble.”
“He said I was intriguing?”
“Yes. I was sure he was going to say annoying. But nope. Intriguing.”
She smiled. “He’s rather intriguing, himself.”
J.T. wagged a finger at her. “Ah, ah, ah. The man has a full plate.”
“I know. Don’t worry. I have no interest in becoming a step-mom to five kids.” She turned in her seat to face him. “How’s it going with Joey? You guys seem to be getting along pretty well. I don’t sense any passive-aggression between you.”
“That’s because there isn’t any. We have one goal, and that is to raise Finn together in a congenial environment.”
She grinned. “You’re a terrible liar, J.T.”
He scowled. “What would I be lying about?”
“I don’t know yet. But I’ll find out.”
J.T. stood. “We should put this fire out and get some sleep.”
Sage got to her feet, too. “Nice deflection.”
After they put the fire out, J.T. walked Sage to her tent, then he went to Joey and Finn’s tent. He stopped at the entrance and whispered.
“Josephina?”
A moment later, she unzipped the door part of the way.
“Mr. O’Connell, why aren’t you tucked into your bed?”
“I couldn’t sleep.” He knelt in front of the door. “Maybe you could come tuck me in.”
She smiled. “Not happening.”
“I figured. But I had to try.”
“Go to bed. I’ll see you in the morning.”
“I’m not going to regret it. Tomorrow, when I wake up. No regrets.”
She glanced over her shoulder at Finn. “We need to take it slow and make sure it’s what we want. For Finn’s sake.”
J.T. grinned. “I know what I want.”
“You say that now after we spent some time making out like we were in high school again. But we’re not in high school. We have a child to think about.”
He nodded. “You’re right. I will follow your lead on this. But just so you know, I’m ready to jump in with both feet.”
