“The water is pretty deep. You could drown.”

He shook his head. “I don’t think so. Unless you’re going to have regrets in the morning, I think you want to jump in there with me.”

“Go to bed, J.T.”

He got to his feet. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

He took a few steps back, then stopped when she smiled at him. “We still got it.”

J.T. laughed. “We sure as hell do.”

Chapter thirty-seven

"I rarely smell like horses."

J.T. was staring at the tent above him. He and Joey took a big step tonight. He tried to think about it rationally to figure out how he felt about it. But he couldn’t remove the emotion from the situation. It was good. Really, really good. And Joey seemed to think so too. She wanted to take it slow. That was fine and he agreed. But it was going to be hard. Now that they had taken that step, he wanted to keep going. Joey had been his first love. He now knew he wanted her to be his last love, as well.

When the door was unzipped, J.T. rose onto an elbow. When Joey’s face appeared, he sat up.

“What the hell are you doing here?”

“Can I come in?”

“Yeah.”

She crawled in and zipped the door behind her. “Hi.”

“Hi, yourself.”

“I was lying in my tent thinking about your request to be tucked in.”

“The request still stands.”

She moved closer, and he lifted the blanket he was lying under. “Maybe we can tuck each other in.”

She laid next to him and he put his arm around her. “Does this mean you’ve changed your mind on moving slow?”

“Out in the real world, no. But tonight, here with you, yes.”

J.T. ran his hand down her side to her waist, then pulled her in tight. “I never stopped thinking about you. Wondering what you were doing. Who you might be with. It killed me to think of you with someone else.”

Joey kissed him. “It’s always been you, J.T. No one else.”

“Then why’d it take you six damn years to get back here?”

“Fear. I was afraid you wouldn’t want me. That you’d resent me forever for Finn.”

He pushed her onto her back and rolled on top of her. “I always wanted you, Josephina. And I always will.”

“What about Finn? Can you forgive me for that?”

He kissed her. “I already have.” He kissed her again, then smiled. “Now, can we stop talking and get down to the not taking it slow, stuff?”

Joey left after a couple of hours and J.T. slept soundly until someone came into the tent again. This time, it was Finn. He climbed under the covers and snuggled next to J.T. The morning sun was filtering through the sides of the blue nylon tent.

“Mom said you were probably cold sleeping in here by yourself.”

“I am a bit cold. But you’re warming me right up. Thank you.” He sniffed the air. “Do you smell that?” Finn shook his head. “Coffee. Someone is making coffee.”
