“What’s going on, J.T.?”

“Nothing.”

“Would this nothing have something to do with Joey?”

J.T. glanced at Sawyer. “I’m just not sure what she wants.”

Sawyer turned toward him in the seat. “In regards to what?”

“In regards to…us.”

“Us? There’s an us, now? Like a you and her?”

“Sort of. Yes. I thought so. Now I’m not so sure.”

“Did something happen over the weekend?”

J.T. shook his head. “I’m not going to kiss and tell.”

Sawyer laughed. “You just did, man. What happened. More kissing? Or…more than more kissing?” He slapped J.T.’s shoulder. “You guys did it.”

“It was more than just doing it.”

“Right, of course.” Sawyer shook his head. “At camp? Surrounded by a bunch of other people? Over half of them kids, including your kid and your sister?”

“It was late and everyone was in bed. And we’re keeping in on the downlow, so don’t go telling anyone.”

“Who am I going to tell? Sage? Dad? I bet granddad would love to hear about it.”

J.T. gripped the steering wheel. “Shut the hell up. I’m serious.”

“You’re secret is safe with me. But why are we keeping it on the downlow? I mean, the fact you’re a couple is good, right? Or is that not what you are?”

“I don’t know what we are. I think it’s the beginning of something. But now I haven’t seen her since we got back. We’ve had one phone conversation about wallpaper.”

Sawyer grinned. “Sounds like love.”

“I don’t know what she wants.”

“What do you want?”

J.T. took a few moments to think about it. Or at least think about how to put it into words. “I’d like to work towards being a family and raising Finn together and not as two single parents.”

“Wow. That’s a big jump from I’ll never be able to forgive her for this.”

“I know. A massive jump. But I do forgive her. I don’t have it in me to hold something over someone’s head. It’s too exhausting.”

“Now you sound like Dad.”

They arrived at the haybarn on the upper pasture and J.T. turned off the truck and looked at Sawyer. “What if she just wanted to take a brief trip down memory lane? What if she’s fine with being a single parent?”

Sawyer smiled at him. “The person you need to be talking to is Joey. I’m pretty sure you’re overthinking this whole thing, and she’s probably as confused as you are. Talk to her and find out if you’re both on the same path.”

J.T. sighed. “You’re right. It’s only been two days. I’m panicking over nothing.” He took a breath. “I hope.”

Sawyer opened the door. “Let’s go toss some hay bales. That’ll make you feel better.”

Joey got the information she needed about the wallpaper from Dutch at the hardware store. As she left the store, she spotted Sage across the street. Sage waved, then jogged across to them.
