“Hey. Another hardware store visit?”

“Yeah. I’ve become a regular customer. Why aren’t you at camp?”

“Lydia is feeling better, and she told me to take the day off.”

“Oh, nice. I don’t suppose you have time for a quick cup of coffee?”

Sage smiled. “Sure.”

They went a block to the coffee shop and took a table by the window. Sage looked at Finn, who had been quiet. “How’re you doing, Finn?”

Finn shrugged and leaned back in his chair.

Joey patted his hand. “He’s a little under the weather, I think. Yesterday I thought he was just recovering from the weekend, but he’s still not himself today.”

“Oh. I’m sorry, honey.”

Finn shrugged again.

The waitress came, and they asked for two coffees. But Finn didn’t want anything. Not even ice cream.

Joey looked at Sage and raised an eyebrow. “He’s definitely not himself.”

“Do you need to get him home?”

“I think I can finish my coffee.” She added some cream to her cup. “I could actually use someone to talk to, if you don’t mind.”

“Of course.”

“You’re the closest thing I have to a friend in town.”

“I’m not close to being your friend. I am your friend. But if this is about J.T., I’m not sure how helpful I’ll be. And I really don’t want any specific details, if you know what I mean.”

Joey glanced at Finn. “No details. And of course it’s about your brother.” She took a breath. “We ah…” She looked at Finn again. “We took a big jump the other night.”

Sage set down her cup. “Likethebig jump?”

“Yes.”

“Whoa. Okay. Are you second guessing that now?”

Joey shook her head. “No. I’m just afraid he might be.”

“So you guys have talked about it?”

“No. I’ve only talked to him once since we got back on Sunday.”

“Well, I think I know my brother pretty well. And I don’t think he’d take that step lightly. Especially considering the situation.”

“I don’t think he would’ve either. I think he would’ve sent me away.”

Sage cocked her head. “You were the instigator?”

Joey picked up her cup and took a sip. “Yes. At camp. After everyone was asleep.”

Sage laughed. “Wow. Okay. That’s gutsy.”

“I couldn’t help it.”
