Joey set her phone aside and settled onto the couch. Was this really happening? Were she and J.T. headed down a path that would bring them back to the happy couple they were in high school? Maybe. But they weren’t in high school any more. They were adults with adult responsibilities. As much as she wanted to jump in the deep end with him, she knew she had to be careful. She had a child to think about.

Chapter thirty-nine

"You get through the situation and you fall apart later."

When his cell phone went off, J.T. woke up and found himself on the couch with the book he was reading lying on his chest. He set the book aside and reached for the phone. He noticed two things. It was Joey calling, and it was twelve-thirty.

“Joey? What’s wrong?”

“It’s Finn. I’m sorry to bother you.”

“What’s wrong with him?”

“His fever is really high now. A hundred and three and the Tylenol isn’t bringing it down. He’s really lethargic and I’m worried about him.”

“Let me call Ember. Then I’ll get right back to you.”

“Okay. Thank you.”

J.T. ended the call with Joey, then dialed his father’s phone.

“J.T.?”

“Sorry it’s so late. Finn is sick, and I was hoping to ask Ember for some advice. She’s probably asleep, though.”

“Not anymore.”

After a moment, Ember was on the phone. “J.T. what’s going on with Finn?”

“I guess he hasn’t been himself all day. Now he’s got a fever of one hundred and three, which won’t come down with Tylenol. And Joey says he’s lethargic.”

“That’s a pretty high temp for a little guy. I can go take a look at him if you want. But you might want to take him in to see Dr. Curtis.”

“In the morning?”

“No. I’d take him now.”

“Okay. I’ll call him and let him know we’re coming in. Thanks, Ember. And I’m sorry I woke you.”

“Anytime, J.T. Keep us updated.”

“I will. Thanks again.”

J.T. called Joey again.

“What’d she say?”

“She thinks he needs to see Dr. Curtis.”

“Oh my goodness.”

“Yeah. I’m going to call him, then I’ll come over and drive you in.”

“Thank you.”

“I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

J.T. talked to Dr. Curtis, who was always on call for the residents of Castle Springs. He was the only doctor for fifty miles. And the nearest hospital was over an hour away. He told J.T. he’d meet them at the clinic.
