Sage raised a hand. “This is where you need to hold back on the details.”

“Right. I’ll just say it was…very nice.”

Sage shook her head. “I think you need to talk to him.”

“You’re right. I do.”

“So go home and call him. But he won’t be home for a few hours. Call him after dinner.”

“I will. Thank you, Sage.”

“Anytime.”

“And I’m here for you if you ever need to talk about anything. Like a really cute and completely unavailable bakery guy.”

Sage smiled. “I’m going to get fat if I keep going in there for muffins.”

Joey nodded. “He does have really good muffins.”

Sage held up a finger. “And five kids.”

“Yes. We don’t want to forget about the five kids.”

By the time Joey got Finn home, he was running a fever and still didn’t want to eat. She laid him on the couch and turned on one of his favorite DVDs, then tried to stay busy until it was time to call J.T. She wasn’t sure what time after dinner was. But she decided to wait until seven. That’d give him time to get home and settled in for the night.

By six-thirty, she was getting worried about Finn, and talking to J.T. no longer seemed like a priority. At six-forty-five, he called her.

“Hi.”

“How’re you doing?”

“I’m fine.”

J.T. cleared his throat. “I thought maybe I could come over and we could talk.”

“I’d love that. And we do need to talk, but Finn is sick.”

“How sick?”

She patted Finn’s feet under the blanket. “I’m not sure. He has a fever and a cough. No appetite. Just a cold or maybe the flu. But I don’t want you to get it and spread it to your family. Ember doesn’t need to get sick right now.”

“Right. We’ll talk soon, then. Keep me updated on Finn.”

“I will. Thank you for calling.”

“Of course. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

He ended the call, and Joey scowled at the phone. “He thinks I’m avoiding him.” She composed a text.

I promise I’m not avoiding talking about the other night. I’ve done nothing but think about it. In a good way. I’ve got no regrets. I hope you feel the same.

It took a moment for him to respond.

Me too. Jumping into the deep end isn’t so bad when you’ve got someone next to you keeping your head above the water.

She answered back.

You always were a strong swimmer.
