Finn mumbled, then sat up and rubbed his eyes.

Joey took his hand. “Hi, sweetheart. How’re you feeling?”

Finn shrugged. “Can I go watch a movie?”

She looked at J.T. “That’s a good sign.” She sat on the edge of the bed and took Finn’s hand. “You can finish the movie you started yesterday.” She glanced at J.T. “You stay put. We need to have that talk.”

“I’ll be right here.”

It took Joey a few minutes to come back to the bedroom, and when she did, she brought two cups of coffee. J.T. was dressed and was leaning against the headboard. She handed him a cup, and he took a sip.

“So, what are we talking about? Where we’ve been? Where we’re going? How we feel?”

Joey sat on the edge of the bed. “I guess all of those things. Starting with Saturday night. It seems you’re okay with what happened.”

J.T. nodded. “I am. Are you?”

“Yes. And you’re here. So I assume it is the beginning of something.”

“Do you want it to be?”

“J.T. quit answering my questions with questions.” She took a breath. “I’ll go first. I hope Saturday night was the first of many nights together. Last night, was really nice. Having you here with me, helping with Finn. Just sleeping next to you. It was all more than I could’ve asked for when I moved back here.”

“That day I found you in this place. I was shocked to see it was you. I had two thoughts that day. One was how happy I was to see you. And the other was, how did I let you get away?”

“All those things that seemed so important back then seem so trivial now.”

“Exactly. The most important thing now is Finn. And the kid deserves to grow up in a house with two parents in it. So, that’s what I’d like to work toward, Joey. Do you think we can get there?”

She nodded. “That’s what I want too. And the big obstacle to that is getting past my horrible betrayal. You say you’ve forgiven me. But I’m afraid you really haven’t. And I certainly haven’t forgiven myself. And I don’t know if I ever will.”

J.T. reached for her hand. “For Finn’s sake, we need to get past that. It’s always going to be a thing. There’s no changing it or taking it back. But I can live with it if you can.”

She smiled. “So, would you take me out on a date this weekend?”

He grinned. “Sure. We can get Sage or Ember to babysit.”

“I’d like to spend some time getting to know you again.”

“I agree. Anything else we need to talk about?”

“Wallpaper.”

“Wallpaper?”

“I found out how to remove it. And I got what I need from Dutch.”

“I told you I’d help.”

“Yes, you did.”

“How about tomorrow? I can get away mid-afternoon.”

“It sounds like a good first test. If we can remove wallpaper together and are still talking when we’re done, we can tackle anything.”
