J.T. was waiting at his father’s house for Joey and Finn to arrive. Finn would be spending the night with his grandpa and Noko Ember. And in the morning, Aunt Sage would be giving him a horseback riding lesson. When J.T. talked to Joey earlier, she’d said Finn was beyond excited.

J.T. was on the porch with Jake, leaning against the railing and tapping his foot.

Jake smiled at him. “You’ve known this woman since you were fifteen.”

“Right. I know. What’s the matter with me?”

Jake laughed. “I guess an official second first date can be daunting.”

“It’s not like I haven’t spent the last six weeks with her.” He blew out a breath. “How has it only been six weeks? So much has happened.”

“It’s been a crazy year, son.”

When Joey’s car arrived, J.T. pushed away from the rail and turned toward the driveway. Jake came up behind him and put a hand on his shoulder.

“Just don’t rush things.”

J.T. glanced at him.Too late for that.“That’s why we’re going out on a date. Starting from scratch. Sort of.”

Joey left the car and got Finn out of his car seat. He ran to the porch and up the steps to hug J.T., then Jake.

Jake laughed. “Hey there, Finn.”

“Hi, Grandpa.”

“Say goodbye to your mom and dad, then go on inside and find Ember. I think she’s in the kitchen.”

Finn hugged Joey and J.T., then went into the house.

Joey shook her head. “I guess I don’t need to worry about him missing me.”

Jake nodded. “He’ll be fine. Go on and have a good time.”

J.T. touched Jake’s arm. “Thanks, Dad.”

“Anytime.”

Joey looked at Jake. “I might call later to check in.”

“Call anytime. As much as you want.”

“I’ll try to wait until his bedtime.”

“We’ll take good care of him.”

J.T. took Joey’s arm. “Come on. We’ve got reservations.”

“Really?”

They went to J.T.’s truck, and he opened the door for her. “Yes. Really.”

When he got in the truck, she turned to him. “Where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise.”

“There are only three restaurants in town. It’s not that big of a surprise.”

“Put your seatbelt on.”
