“He’ll love that.” She went to J.T. and hugged him. “This is going to be a beautiful house.”

“Thank you. I think so, too.”

“When will it be done?”

“It’s going up pretty fast. I’ll be in by winter.”

“And you’ll get rid of the trailer?”

“Yes. Or I might haul it over to your place and park it in front of the house.”

“You would do that.”

“Yeah. So, you better be nice to me.” He took her hand. “Come on. We don’t want to miss the sunset.”

They returned to the deck and moved the chairs near the firepit, before sitting down to watch the sun sinking toward the trees across the meadow. J.T. put his arm around Joey and she rested a hand on his thigh.

“This is absolutely beautiful.”

“I’ve sat here a few times with Sawyer, but it’s a lot better with you.”

Joey laughed. “I hope so.” She laid her head on his shoulder. “How do you think our first date is going?”

“I would say it doesn’t get much better than this.”

They were quiet as the sun dropped below the trees. The sky turned a brilliant pink, before darkness crept in and the light disappeared.

Joey sighed. “Thank you for this. It’s not what I expected. It was perfect.”

“Josephina, I’d love to wake up with you tomorrow morning and have breakfast in bed. But I’m going to leave it up to you. If you want me to take you home in a while, I will.” When she didn’t say anything, he got to his feet. “We should get these dishes packed up.”

They packed the dirty dishes into a plastic bag, and covered the leftover lasagna, then put it into the insulated tote.

Joey glanced at him. “You should probably get that into your refrigerator.”

“Yeah. I guess so. I’ll drop it off at the trailer, then run you home.”

He turned off the twinkle lights and took Joey’s hand as they headed for the truck. When they got to it, he opened the door for her. She hesitated a moment, then put her arms around his neck.

“Thank you for a perfect second first date.”

“Does this mean we’re going to have a second second date?”

“Definitely.”

They drove to the trailer and J.T. parked out front. “I’ll be right back.”

Joey opened her door. “I’ll help you get this stuff inside.”

They carried the dishes and the lasagna inside, and Joey put the dishes in the sink. J.T. came up behind her. “I don’t’ suppose you’d like to help me wash them?”

“She turned to him and put her hands on his shoulders. “How about we do them in the morning.”

He cocked his head. “In the morning?”

She smiled. “Will you make me the world’s best French toast?”

He put his hands around her waist. “I don’t have any bread. But I can scramble some eggs. I could probably fry up some bacon, too.”
