Jake and Finn came back out a few minutes later. “It’s looking nice in there. Very impressive.”

“Well, I’ve gotten a lot of help. I couldn’t have done it without the family’s support.”

Finn was tugging on Jake’s hand. “I guess I better put this guy in the truck.”

They went to the truck and Ember hugged Joey. “I’ll send you a text when we’re headed back.”

“Thank you.”

Joey waved as they drove away, then went into the house and changed her clothes. She looked in the mirror as she combed her hair. “You better still be at the house, J.T. I don’t want to waste time tracking you down.”

She went out the back door and headed across the field. She could hear hammering as she got closer. “That’s a good sign.”

The outside of the house was finished and the hammering was coming from the inside. Both J.T. and Sawyer’s trucks were parked in front of the house. Joey went onto the porch and opened the front door, which was a beautiful natural wood with a half circle shaped stained glass window at the top of it.

“J.T.?”

The hammering stopped and J.T. came from the kitchen. “Hey.” He went to her and gave her a hug and a kiss. “This is a nice surprise. Where’s Finn?”

“Jake and Ember just picked him up and took him into town for a few hours.”

J.T. grinned. “Really?”

“Yeah.”

J.T. glanced over his shoulder. “Sawyer. I’m taking a break.”

“We just got started.” He came from the kitchen, then stopped walking when he saw Joey. “Oh. Hey, Joey.”

“Sawyer.”

He sighed. “Go. Take abreak. I’ll keep working on your kitchen cabinets.”

J.T. took Joey’s hand. “Thanks.”

“Who am I to stand in the way of true love? Or lust. Whatever the hell it is. Go. I assume your time is limited.”

J.T. opened the door and they went outside. “The trailer? Or your house?”

“The trailer is closer.”

They got into the truck and drove to the trailer, then got out and went inside. J.T. stopped inside the door and took Joey in his arms. “These stolen moments aren’t nearly often enough.”

They headed for the bedroom, and Joey looked at the unmade bed. “Hmm.”

“Saves time.” He pulled her in for a kiss. “And time with you is precious.” He pulled off her t-shirt, and she unbutton his shirt.

“Take those boots off, cowboy.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He sat on the edge of the bed and pulled off his boots, then Joey straddled his lap and pushed him back onto the rumpled covers. He smiled at her. “I remember a time when you were shy.”

“I guess I’ve outgrown it.”

He pulled her in for a kiss. “Thank God.”

J.T. was lying on his back with his arm around Joey. He scowled at the ceiling. “I hate this.”

“Excuse me?”
