He smiled at Ember. “Do you think you could watch Finn on Thursday while the four of us go out? I feel like kicking some ass at darts.”

“Sure.”

“It won’t be overnight or anything.”

“You might as well leave him overnight, so you can stay out late and not worry about waking him up.”

J.T. looked at Joey. “Is that okay with you?”

“Sure. Sounds fun.” She grinned. “The White Buffalo?”

“Uh…no.” He laughed. “That would probably not end up being a fun night.” He looked at Sage. “Are you down for darts?”

“Drinking with my brothers again? How can I say no to that?”

Chapter forty-two

"We're really doing this?"

The rest of the summer was a blur. J.T. spent his time between his ranch duties, working on his house, and helping Joey on the bed-and-breakfast. There wasn’t a lot of time for much else. Ember kept Finn every Saturday night giving J.T. and Joey a date night. But it really wasn’t enough. They managed to sneak in a little time during the week, but it wasn’t much.

Sawyer had been gone a lot of the time and J.T. was afraid it meant he was seriously considering going pro. But whenever he asked, Sawyer’s answer was always the same. He was still thinking about it. When he was home, he helped J.T. on the house and it was close to being done. J.T. would be able to move in within a month. And he was looking forward to it.

The week before school started, Joey was on the porch painting the railing. Finn was outside with her playing with Sparky. When Joey saw Jake and Ember pull into the driveway, she set down her brush and went to greet them.

As they got out of the truck, she smiled. “This is a nice surprise.”

Jake looked at the house. “It’s looking great, Joey. When do you think you’ll be open for business?”

“I’d like to open by November. Several people in town have contacted me about relatives coming for the holidays. I think I can stay booked through Christmas.”

“That’s great.”

“And I think I’ve come up with a name. The Green Springs Inn.”

Ember smiled. “I like that.” She took Jake’s arm. “We’re headed into town for some lunch and shopping. We thought maybe Finn would like to come with us.”

Finn, who had run to hug them, clapped his hands. “Yay! Can I, Mom?”

“Sure. Sounds fun.” She looked at him. “Go inside and wash your hands and face. And change your shoes.”

“Can I wear my boots?”

“Of course.”

He looked at Jake’s hat. “And my hat?”

“Yes. Do you need help?”

Jake took Finn’s hand. “I’ll help him. I’d like to see what you’ve been doing with the inside.”

They headed for the front door and Ember smiled at Joey. “We should be gone for a couple of hours. So if there’s anything you’d like to do, you’ll have some time to do it.”

Joey blushed. “I can think of a thing or two.”

Ember touched her arm. “J.T.’s working on his house today. He could probably use a break.”

“I’ll go find out.”
