“Well, they can grow up with their aunts and uncles.”

J.T. grinned. “Does that mean you’re planning on having another after this one?”

“Most likely.”

“In a few years, the O’Connells are going to take over Castle Springs Elementary. Especially after we get Sage and Sawyer married off.” He took a beer from the refrigerator. “Although, I guess technically Sage’s kids won’t be O’Connells.”

“I guess that’s true.”

“If she gets her way, they’ll be Hutchins.”

Jake cocked his head. “As in Xander Hutchins?”

“Yeah.”

“Even with all those kids?”

J.T. nodded. “She claims it’s a deal breaker. But I’m not so sure. I do know if he didn’t have those kids, she’d be spending a whole lot more time at the bakery.”

Jake laughed. “Hmm. Well, he seems like a nice enough guy.”

Chapter forty-five

"Um...somewhere really exotic."

Ember and Jake volunteered to watch Finn again for the night, giving Joey and J.T. their second night in a row to be alone. As they drove to the trailer, Joey moved close to J.T. and laid her head on his shoulder.

“That was a perfect night.”

“I agree.”

“I’m almost sorry you didn’t arrange for the Justice of the Peace to be there.”

“Really?”

“The idea of a wedding is kind of daunting. It would’ve made things a lot easier.”

He glanced at her. “We can still go to City Hall. I know where Stan Whitmore lives. I can bang on his door and wake him up if you want me to.”

Joey patted his thigh. “Let’s not do that. We can’t get married without your family there.”

“What about your family?”

“My family. It’s kind of messy right now.”

“What’s going on?”

She sighed. “My dad has barely spoken to me since your dad bought the property. He’s seen Finn once since then. Maddy isn’t talking to me at all. I thought she’d be glad to be out from under the obligation of the bed-and-breakfast. But I was wrong.”

“And your mother?”

“She’s trying to stay neutral. But she basically told me she wouldn’t come here for the wedding if I invite my father.”

J.T. pulled to the side of the road and turned to look at her. “Maybe I’m out-of-place saying this, but screw them.”

“They’re selfish, right? They can’t lay their differences aside long enough to come to my wedding? You’re right. Screw them.”

He smiled at her. “Ultimately, though. You need to do what you feel is the right thing. If you want to invite them, then invite them.”
