“Whatever.” She headed back for the table.

“What made you think you had a chance of beating me?”

Without answering, she sat down and picked up her margarita.

Sawyer grinned. “He plays even better when he’s had a few.” Sawyer lost his grin as he spotted something behind J.T. “Uh oh. Ex-girlfriend alert.”

“Shit.”

Joey came up to the table and smiled at J.T. “Good game.”

“Thank you.”

“Hi Sawyer. Sage.”

Sawyer nodded, and Sage gave her a smile. “Hi, Joey. I heard you were back in town.”

“Yes. I am.” She looked at J.T. again. “I believe it’s your birthday today.”

“Yep.”

“Happy Birthday.”

“It was.”

“I’m not going to ruin your birthday celebration. I just came to say hi.”

He looked up at her. “I thought Mandy went back home.”

“She did. She’s just here for the weekend.”

“And why are you slumming it at The Corner Bar?”

She cocked her head. “If your dad owned a bar, would you go there to drink?”

J.T. glanced at Sage. “No. I guess not.”

She nodded. “Have a good night.”

“Right. You too.”

Sage watched her go, then nudged J.T. “I forgot how pretty she was.”

“Shut up, Sage.”

Sawyer stood. “I think the birthday boy needs another shot of tequila.” He headed for the bar.

Sage looked at J.T. “She could’ve ignored you.”

“I wish she did.”

They played several more rounds of darts, with J.T. winning every time. But the games with Sawyer were closer than the oneswith Sage. She lost all night to both of her brothers. The men had a few more shots of tequila and a few more beers, but Sage just had one more margarita. She was taking her designated driver duty seriously.

When Sawyer and Sage decided to play one more game of darts, J.T. told them he was going to the bathroom, then outside for a few minutes to get some fresh air. When he went outside, he took a deep breath of the cool night air. He was feeling the tequila. He didn’t usually drink this much. But hell, it was his birthday. When he spotted Joey at an outside table by herself, he almost went back inside. But she spotted him and gave him a wave. It would be rude to ignore her.

He walked over to the table.

She smiled at him. “You’re looking a little unsteady there, cowboy. Have a seat.”
