J.T. pulled out a chair and sat across from her. “Why are you out here by yourself?”

“Mandy has found herself a friend.”

“Seriously? Who?”

“Um…he said his name was Rex or Tex. I don’t know. Tall, skinny, smells like cigarettes.”

“Rex Harris. That’s a match made in hell if there ever was one.”

“Is my sister in trouble?”

“No. I’m pretty sure Mandy can handle anything Rex throws at her.”

She looked at him for a moment. “I hope your multiple shots of tequila don’t have anything to do with me.”

“Don’t you have anything better to do than keep track of how much I drink?”

“It’s just an observation. You and Sawyer made multiple trips to the bar.”

He smiled at her. “Josephina, I’m long past getting drunk over you. Hell, I didn’t even get drunk when you left.”

“Maybe because you were barely nineteen.”

“That wouldn’t have stopped me. I just didn’t feel the need.”

“I see. So you were just fine after I left?”

He sighed. “I didn’t say that.”

She reached for his hand and he pulled it back and put it on his lap. “If it helps at all. I’m…sorry it ended the way it did.”

“You mean you leaving me without even saying goodbye?”

She took a sip of her drink. “After the fight. I figured I was the last person you’d want to see.”

“Well, you figured wrong.”

“J.T.”

He shook his head. “It was a long time ago. I’m over it. I’m over you. I’m twenty-five friggin’ years old and what happened in high school was a million years ago.”

“Okay.”

He got to his feet and held onto the table for a moment to steady himself. “But that being said, I really wish you had picked another piece of property to buy. Like maybe something in the next county.”

Joey watched J.T. go inside the bar, then took another drink. “Damn you, J.T.”

When Mandy came outside alone and over to the table, she sat with a groan.

Joey looked at her. “Where’s your cowboy?”

“He decided to be a jerk.”

“You know those cowboys. They’ll break your heart every time.”

Mandy raised an eyebrow. “Somehow I don’t think you’re talking about Rex.”

“I was just talking with J.T.”
