“And I don’t need a candle to make the kitchen smell good because it smells good all the time, thanks to Genny, Sage, and your dad.”

“I guess we have everything we need.”

“Are there games here? We could get Bob a friend.”

“No games. But there’s a petting zoo. And great food. Are you hungry?”

“Yes. Let’s eat, then go pet some animals.”

They walked to the park and checked all the food booths before deciding on hotdogs from the high school football booth.

Ember looked at Jake while they waited for their hotdogs. “Did the boys play football?”

“Yeah. In fact, they’ve probably visited this booth already or will soon.”

A husky teen-aged boy brought them their hotdogs and two bags of chips. “Here you go, Mr. O’Connell.”

“Thanks, Todd. I heard you had a hell of a season last year.”

“I’m going to be playing for Montana State in the fall.”

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

Jake paid for the hotdogs, then handed him another thirty dollars. “Say hi to your folks for me.”

“Yes, sir. Will do.”

They found a table and Ember sat down. Jake remained on his feet. “What can I get you to drink?”

“A bottle of water would be great.”

“Okay. I’ll track one down for you. And I’m going to get myself a beer.”

Ember looked up at him. “Are you sure that’s wise? The last time you went to a beer tent, you got hit on.”

He laughed. “Well, hopefully I give off the married vibe now.”

He turned to go as a woman came rushing up to him and threw her arms around him. “Jake O’Connell.”

He stepped away, then took a moment to recognize her. “Theresa?”

“Yes. How are you?”

“Great.” He glanced at Ember. “This is my wife, Ember.”

Theresa looked at Ember and smiled, then raised an eyebrow at Jake. “I didn’t know. Congratulations.”

“Thank you. So, are you just here for the weekend?”

“Yes. Brought my horses for the horse show tomorrow.”

“Right.”

She patted his chest. “So good to see you again.”

“You too.”
