“Brady. These are pretty nice strawberries for this early in the year.”

“They taste as good as they look.”

“May I?”

“Go ahead.” He picked up a strawberry and handed it to her.

She took it from him, looked at it closely, then took a bite. “Not bad.” It was actually quite good, but she didn’t want to let him know she thought so.

“Strawberry pie?”

“I was thinking strawberry shortcake for our family barbeque on Monday.”

“How many baskets do you want?”

“Do you have any lemons?”

“Yes.” He held up a lemon.

“I need three of them. No, make it four.” She watched him bag four lemons. “And two baskets of strawberries, a nice sized watermelon, and twelve ears of corn.” She shook her head. “I don’t know how you get corn this early in the year.”

He winked at her. “You just need to know the right people.”

She ignored the wink and glanced at the young man helping in the booth. “Do you suppose your helper there could carry this to my car for me? I seem to be without a young, strong O’Connell at the moment.”

Brady took her money, then packed everything into a box and picked it up. “I’ll bring it to your car for you.”

She nodded and started walking toward the parking area set up outside of the closed street. Brady glanced at her.

“Are you going to the community dance tonight?”

She laughed. “Brady. I haven’t been to the community dance in twenty years. Maybe longer.” She looked at him. “Are you going?”

“I’d consider it if I thought there’d be someone interesting there to talk to.”

“Hmm. Surely you have a lot of interesting customers.”

“Not really. There is one semi-temperamental woman I find quite interesting. I wouldn’t mind accidentally running into her at the dance if I decided to go.”

They reached Genny’s car, and she opened the back end. Brady set the box inside for her, then closed the door.

She looked at him for a moment. “Despite the fact you called this woman semi-temperamental, you might stand a slight chance of accidentally running into her later. But it’s more likely to happen at the café, then at the dance.”

He smiled. “I think I might be at the café later. Say around seven?”

“There’s a decent chance that woman might be there at that time, as well.”

She took her keys out of her purse and Brady opened the car door for her. “You have a good afternoon, Genevieve.”

“You too, Brady.”

Brady took a step back from the car, but stayed there while she backed out of her space. She gave him a nod, then drove out of the parking lot. She looked at him in the rearview mirror and shook her head. “Semi-temperamental? I haven’t been trying hard enough.”

As Jake and Ember made their way through the booths, he took her hand. “This is a bit of déjà vu.”

“It’s very reminiscent of the Fourth of July in Schaeffer Mills. Should we buy you a new cowboy hat?”

He adjusted the beige hat they’d bought almost a year ago. “This one is still fine.”
