He blew out a breath. “God, I hope not. I hope she wouldn’t have kept that from him. And if she did, then why would she blatantly bring him back here without telling J.T.?” He looked at Ember. “Would she do that? I mean, aside from him looking like my son. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out the math.”

“Was he the right age?”

“He seemed to be around five. Unless he’s really big for his age, he wasn’t much younger than that. Damn her. Why wouldn’t she tell him?”

“Maybe that’s why she’s back.”

Jake took a drink of his beer. “Oh shit. I didn’t get your water.”

“It’s okay.”

“She’s had plenty of opportunity to tell him since she’s been back.”

“It would be a hard conversation. But if that’s J.T.’s son, then she should’ve found a way to tell him.” She stood. “I’m going to go see if they have water in the beer tent.”

“Ember.”

“I need to see this child.”

“Okay. But don’t say anything.”

“Of course not. I’ll be right back.”

Jake had started in on his hotdog when Ember returned and sat down with a bottle of water. “Well?”

“That is one cute child. And definitely the right age.”

“Did you talk to Joey?”

“I introduced myself. Told her I was your wife. It seemed to throw her a bit.”

Jake took a drink of his beer. “After we eat, I need to find J.T. There’s no way he hasn’t visited the beer tent yet.”

“Do you think he knows?”

“If she was there with the kid. Maybe.”

Ember nodded. “Finish your hotdog, then we’ll go find him.”

“If what we think is what it is. That’s my grandson.”

Ember nodded. “Let’s take this one step at a time. We’ll find J.T. and see what he knows.”

“Damn her to hell if she kept this from him.”

Chapter twelve

"We made the O'Connell promise."

Jake finished his hotdog and his beer, then took out his phone. After considering his options, he dialed Sawyer’s number.

“Hey, Dad.”

“Are you with J.T.?”

“I was a while ago. He took off. I’m guessing he went home.”

“Do you know if he’s talked to Joey today?”
