Sawyer was quiet for a moment. “You’ve seen the kid?”

“Yeah. You too?”

“I was with J.T. in the beer tent. He came in with Joey. Where are you at? I’ll come talk to you.”

“Ember and I are at the tables in the food booth area.”

“I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

Jake returned his phone to his pocket. “Sawyer’s coming. J.T. has seen Joey’s son.”

“And…?”

Jake shrugged. “I don’t know. Sawyer said he went home.” He finished his beer. “I could use another one of these.”

Ember took the bottle from him. “I’ll get it. You stay here.”

He nodded. “Yeah. I’m liable to say something I shouldn’t.”

Ember stood and headed for the beer tent. While she was gone, Sawyer showed up and sat next to Jake.

“I know what you’re thinking, Dad. Sage and I are thinking the same thing.”

“The boy smiled at me. It was like looking at five-year-old J.T.”

Ember returned with two beers. She set one in front of Jake and handed the other to Sawyer. “I figured you might want one, too.”

“Thank you.”

Jake looked at Sawyer. “Your sister isn’t going to go say or do something she shouldn’t, is she?”

“No. We made the O’Connell promise.”

Ember smiled. “The O’Connell promise?”

Jake held his hand out toward Sawyer, and they hooked pinkies, bumped fists, slapped hands, and then shook. “No O’Connell goes back on the promise.”

“Okay.”

Sawyer took a drink of his beer. “The thing I don’t understand is if she’s kept this secret for six years, why come back now and flaunt the kid in front of him? That’s just a bitch move.”

Ember looked at the two men. “I’m totally on your side here, but maybe she didn’t know how to tell him. Maybe she’s back to introduce J.T. to his son.”

Jake shook his head. “There’s no making this right.”

Sawyer leaned back in his chair. “So, what do we do about it?”

“It’s not our place to do anything.”

“That sucks. I can’t do nothing.”

“It’s between J.T. and Joey. I would like to know where the hell he is, though.”

Sawyer took out his phone and called J.T.’s number. It rang five times and went to voicemail. “Call me, dude. I’m with Dad. We’re worried about you.”

Jake drank some more beer, then set the bottle down and got to his feet. “I’m going to go see if he’s at the trailer. Can you get Ember home?”

“Sure.”
