Jake studied Sawyer for a moment. “How many beers have you had?”

“I had one a couple of hours ago with J.T. And this half.”

“Okay. Don’t finish that.”

Sawyer nodded, and Jake kissed Ember. “I’ll be home in a while.”

“Okay.

Sawyer looked at him. “You don’t want me to come with you?”

“No. I want to talk to him alone.” He put a hand on Sawyer’s shoulder. “Just get my wife home safe.”

“Yes, sir.”

Jake drove to J.T.’s house and pulled in behind his truck. The lights were on inside the trailer. He got out of his truck and knocked on the door.

“J.T., it’s Dad.”

After a few moments, J.T. opened the door, then went to sit on the couch. Jake went inside and took the chair.

J.T. looked at him. “Sawyer told you?”

Jake shook his head. “I went to get a beer. Joey was behind the bar and her son was there.”

J.T. sighed. “I keep trying to convince myself she hooked up with someone right after she left here. That’s a possibility, right?”

“I guess. Anything is possible.”

“Our breakup was bad. Maybe she…” He shook his head, then rubbed his face and ran his hands through his hair. “She wasn’t that kind of girl. We didn’t even… It took a while to get to that point. I can’t see her jumping into something with someone else. Not that quick anyway. No matter how angry she was at me.”

“J.T.”

“Yeah?”

“I’m your father. When that little boy smiled at me, there was no doubt in my mind who his father was.”

J.T. got to his feet and paced around the room. “Well, shit. I felt it too. I just knew.”

“Come sit down.”

J.T. returned to the couch. “What do I do about this? Why would she keep it from me?”

“That’s a question you need to ask her. If that child is your son, you have rights. If you want to exercise them.”

“Of course I want to exercise them. Why’d she come back? She had to know we’d figure it out?”

“Maybe she came back to tell you. And just hasn’t been able to figure out how.”

“Don’t justify her behavior, Dad.”

“I’m not. I promise you.”

“So, what do I do?”

“You need to talk to her. But not tonight. Give it some time to sink in. And don’t do it in a public space. Wait until she’s at the house.”

“That may not be until Tuesday.”
