“And who would that be?”

He grinned. “You know who I’m talking about.”

She shook her head. “Honestly. I don’t.”

He took a drink of his coffee. “I first noticed you in Mr. Bertrum’s algebra class.”

“Brady.”

“I’m serious. Mike Colson told me he heard you had a crush on me.”

She shook her head. “I did. But you were a junior. I was a freshman. I couldn’t imagine you’d even look my way.”

“Well, I did. Unfortunately, Jake was quite protective of you. He got wind of my interest and told me to leave you alone.”

“No way.”

He raised his hand. “God’s honest truth. Your grandmother had recently passed, and he said you didn’t need some guy coming in and breaking your heart.”

“So, if Jake hadn’t intervened?”

“I wanted to ask you to the winter dance. But I wasn’t about to cross Jake.”

“I’m going to have to talk to him about that.”

He cocked his head at her. “How about we order some pie?”

Genny smiled. “Their pie here is good, but it’s not as good as mine.”

“Oh I know. I can still taste that blueberry pie you brought my way before Thanksgiving.”

“I suppose a piece of pie won’t hurt.”

“Good.” Brady waved at Carla and she came to the table. “What kind of pie do you have tonight?”

“There’s not a lot left this late in the day. But we have a couple of pieces of apple, a slice of blueberry, and one last piece of banana cream.”

Brady and Genny both said, “Banana cream, please,” at the same time.

Brady laughed. “How about you split that banana cream slice in half and bring us a slice of apple pie, too?”

“You got it.”

Genny looked at him. “Brady, I believe we have more in common than I thought we did.”

“Because we both like Banana Cream pie?”

“That’s part of it.”

Carla returned to the table with the two pieces of pie, both cut in half. She set them in the middle of the table. “You all can fight over who gets what first.”

Brady pushed the Banana Cream in front of Genny. “Ladies first.”

She picked up her fork and took a bite. “It’s very good. This is one pie I don’t make.”

“Why is that?”

“I don’t know. I’ve just always enjoyed making fruit pies.”
