“Well, if you ever decide to try your hand at a cream pie, I’ll be happy to taste test it for you.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” She took another bite, then looked at Brady. “I did have a slight crush on you and I would’ve gone to the dance with you.”

“Thank you for saying that.”

“I’m not just saying it. It’s the truth. If I’d known then Jake had talked to you, I would’ve been furious with him.”

“He was just looking out for you.”

“I suppose.” She finished her half of the pie and they switched plates.

Brady studied her for a moment. “This pie is good. But I’m still hungry. Any chance you’d like to order dinner?”

Genny smiled. “Brady. It seems we’re doing things backwards here.”

He shrugged. “As long as we’re moving forward, that’s all that matters.”

Jake finished his shower, then got into bed next to Ember. He’d stayed and talked with J.T. for quite a while. They’d strayed away from talking about Joey and Finn and Jake hoped it took his mind off of things for a while at least. J.T. seemed in better spirits by the time he left. And he guessed that’s all he could hope for.

Ember put her arm around him and laid her head on his chest. “Feel better?”

“I really hate what J.T. is going through. I can’t even imagine missing the first five years of any of my kids’ lives.”

“It’s terrible. Those years are so important. When is he going to talk to her?”

“I hope he didn’t go track her down after I left him. I told him to wait until tomorrow.”

“I’m sure he waited. He needs time to process it all.”

“We all do. We’re grandparents, Ember.”

She laughed. “Speak for yourself. I really don’t want to be a pregnant grandma. Maybe we can come up with a different title for me.”

“We’ll work on it.” He kissed her forehead. “How’re you feeling about that? The pregnant part. Do you still think that’s what’s going on?”

She took a breath. “I don’t know if it’s my intuition telling me or if it’s just my desire for it to be true. But yes, I still feel that I’m pregnant.”

“You’re ready then?”

“Yeah. I think I am. I can’t wait to have a baby with you. And honestly, I’ll be disappointed if that’s not what’s happening with my body.”

“We were just talking about our kids being a few years older than their nieces and nephews. Now, this first one is going to have a nephew that’s six years older than them.”

She smiled. “It’s a bit mind-boggling.”

“That’s what you get for falling in love with an old guy.”

“Well, old guy. How about we make extra-double sure, I’m pregnant.”

“I can do that.” He rolled onto his side and pulled her in close. “If you’re not pregnant already, you will be soon.”

“If at first you don’t succeed.”

He kissed her. “Try, try, again. And again. And—”
