“Do you want to play something?”

“Um…”

Joey came up beside J.T. “We’re going to have some brunch, remember?”

“Oh yeah.” He ran for the door. “Can I have a muffin?”

“After you eat something good for you.” She looked at J.T. “He likes muffins.”

She started walking and J.T. followed her to the kitchen. There was a small round table in the corner set with three place settings. She pointed to the table. “Have a seat.”

J.T. hung his hat from the back of the chair, then sat down. Finn sat too and smiled. “Do you like muffins?”

“I love muffins.”

“Well, boys, we need to eat this quiche first.” Joey set down a glass casserole containing a delicious looking quiche.

J.T. glanced at her. “Looks good.”

“You sound surprised.”

“I guess I am, a little.”

She cocked her head. “I’m not eighteen anymore.”

“I have noticed that.”

She picked up a triangular spatula and cut a piece of quiche, then put it on his plate. She put a smaller slice on Finn’s plate, then put a third on hers before sitting down. She looked around the table. Next to the quiche was a plate of fried ham and another with buttered toast. She suddenly stood again.

“I forgot the coffee. I assume you drink coffee.”

“More than I should, yes.”

She filled two cups with coffee, then set them on the table. “Okay. Dig in.”

J.T. took a bite, then nodded. “Mmm. Good.” He glanced at Joey. “Not that I was expecting it not to be.”

“You really like it?”

“Yes.” He took a piece of ham and a slice of toast. “This is nice. Thank you.”

Finn looked at Joey. “Do I have to eat ham?”

“No. But you need to eat all of your quiche.”

He took another bite. “I like it.”

“I know you do.” She looked at J.T. “I know this is awkward. It’ll get better.”

“I’m sure it will.”It can’t really get worse.

They were quiet while they ate and Finn finished first, then pushed his plate aside. “Muffin please.”

“You need to wait until we’re finished. Just relax for a minute.”

Finn fell back against the chair and sighed.

J.T. held back a smile as he took a sip of his coffee. Then he looked around the kitchen at the missing cupboard doors. “Are you replacing the doors?”
