“What if I’m…too old to do this again?”

“How old do you think your grandparents were when they stepped in to help me raise you and Genny?”

Jake shrugged. “My age, I guess.”

“That’s right. They were in their forties. Dad was damn near fifty. They didn’t worry about whether they were too old. They just jumped in and took care of business. And they did it well.”

“They did that.”

“And you will too. You have a good partner in Ember. And the two of you will raise that child like you did the first three. You’ve got this, son. I have no doubts about that.”

Jake nodded. “Thanks, Dad.”

Jacob shook his hand, then pulled him in for a hug. “Congratulations. I’ve become a grandfather again and a great-grandfather in a week’s time. I think I’m the one who should be worried.”

Jake grinned. “You’ve got this, Dad.”

Jake waited until everyone was done eating and they were having coffee and some of the pie Genny brought to make his announcement.

He glanced at Ember, then cleared his throat. “I have an announcement. Actually…” He took Ember’s hand. “We have an announcement. We are…expecting.”

Sawyer grinned. “Expecting…more pie? What?” He laughed. “So I may not be the younger brother much longer?”

Sage nudged him. “It could be a girl.” She stood and hugged Jake, then Ember. “That’s great news.”

J.T. raised his glass of iced tea. “At this rate, we’re going to need a bigger table.”

Genny wiped the tears in her eyes with her napkin. “Who knew the phone call to Everett would lead us to this point. I’m so glad I didn’t take no for an answer when the motel tried to stonewall me.”

Jake smiled at her. “Thank you, Genny, for being my hard ass, never take no for an answer, sister. We may have to name this child after you if it’s a girl.”

“Don’t do that to the poor thing.”

Jacob looked at her. “What’s wrong with Genevieve? It’s a beautiful name.”

“It’s not the name, Dad. It’s the fact that we already have three Jacobs in the family. We don’t need two Genevieves.”

J.T. laughed. “I don’t know. Genny junior has a ring to it.”

Chapter nineteen

"That was just a bonus."

J.T. was waiting on the porch for Joey and Finn to arrive. It was mid-afternoon, and they’d be staying for dinner with Ember, Jake, and Jacob. Sage and Sawyer would be staying clear at the request of J.T. They’d be introduced next time.

When Joey arrived and parked behind his truck, J.T. went down the porch steps to meet them.

Joey got out of the car and gave him a smile, then helped Finn out of his car seat.

Finn jumped out of the car. “You live here? This is cool!”

J.T. smiled. “Yeah. I guess it is.”

“Can I see a horse?”

“Sure. I’ll show you everything.” He looked at Joey. “Is that okay?”

“Of course.”
