“I just wanted to let you know I talked to Finn last night.”

“And?”

“And he wants to see you this morning. Can you drop by on your way to the ranch?”

“I’ll be there in about thirty minutes.”

J.T. ended the call and sat on the edge of the bed. He should’ve asked how it went. But Joey didn’t sound upset or anything. He got dressed, drank a quick cup of coffee, then went out to his truck. He had two days of checking fences with Sawyer ahead of him. But first, he was going to talk to his son. It still didn’t sound right.

J.T. drove to Joey’s and parked behind her Honda, then got out of the truck. Finn was sitting on the porch steps, so J.T. walked to the porch and sat next to him.

“Good morning, Finn.”

“Hi.”

J.T. was quiet for a moment. “I guess your mom told you who I am.”

Finn nodded.

“What do you think about that?”

“It’s cool. I always wanted a dad.”

“Good. I’m glad.”

Finn turned on the step and looked at J.T. “Can I call you Dad?”

J.T. smiled. “Of course. I’d love for you to call me Dad.”

Finn inched closer and laid his head against J.T.’s arm. “Cool.”

They sat there for a few moments without saying anything else. Finally, J.T. said, “Since I’m your dad, it means my dad is your granddad. And my granddad is your great granddad.”

“What about Ember? I like her.”

“Ember is your grandmother.”

Finn laughed. “She’s too young. I think she’s my aunt.”

“You can call her Ember if you want. Or you can call her Noko.”

“Noko?”

“Yeah. That’s what my dad called his grandma. It’s a special name that means grandmother.”

“That’s cool. I like that.”

“You also have an aunt and an uncle. You can meet them soon. And you have a great aunt. But you can call her Aunt Genny.”

“Man. Lots of people.”

“Yeah. Lots of people who all love you and are excited to spend time with you and get to know you.”

Finn lifted his head and looked at J.T. “Are you going to live with us?”

“No. But I live right next door. You’re going to see me a lot.”

“Can I see your house?”
