Tonight he’d be sleeping in a tent on the far side of the ranch. And spending a second day tomorrow riding along the fence line. But if all went well, they’d get in late afternoon. “How about tomorrow? Today, I need to go check the fence line with my brother, Sawyer.”
“Can I come?”
“Not this time. You have to learn how to ride a horse first. Then you can come.”
“When can I learn to ride a horse?”
J.T. thought for a moment. “I’ll check with your mom. But Saturday should work.”
“When’s Saturday?”
“Three days.”
Finn frowned. “Aww.”
“It’ll go by fast. I promise. I’ll come see you tomorrow after I get back.”
“Okay. When do I get to pick out my kitten?”
“They haven’t been born yet. But any day now. I’ll let you know as soon as they’re born and you can come see them and pick one out.”
“I already know what to name him.”
“Really? What’s that?”
“Sparky, because he’s orange like fire.”
Jinx was orange, but that didn’t guarantee any of the kittens would be. “That sounds like a great name.” Joey came through the front door and J.T. got to his feet and gave her a smile. “Morning.”
“Good morning. Can you stay for breakfast?”
“I’ve got to go. Sawyer and I are going to check the fences today. We’ll be gone overnight. Finn here, wants to check out my trailer. I told him maybe tomorrow night when I get back. If it’s not too late.”
“Okay.”
“I can call you tomorrow when I get home and we’ll take it from there.”
“Sounds good.”
He looked at her for a moment. “Thank you.”
“Of course. It was long overdue.”
He smiled at Finn. “I need to go now. But I’ll see you tomorrow night. Unless I get back too late. Then I’ll see you the next day.”
“And horses on Saturday?”
“Yes. Horses on Saturday.” He glanced at Joey. “If that’s okay with you.”
“It sounds good. Maybe we can do a trail ride if you’re not too busy.”
“I’d like that.” He patted Finn’s head. “I’ll see you soon.”
Finn smiled up at him. “Bye, Dad.”
J.T. looked at Joey. “I’ll call you.”
“Have a good day, J.T.”
