“I thought we were being careful.”
“Apparently not careful enough.”
“Hmm. It would seem so.”
“Um…if you want to do a paternity test, I’d totally understand.”
J.T. shook his head. “I’m pretty sure I’m the last guy you’d come to if you were just looking for someone to fill in for a dad for Finn. I believe you, Josephina. Besides, my dad says he knew the second he laid eyes on Finn.”
“He does look just like you.”
“Your word, along with my dad’s intuition, is good enough for me.”
She nodded. “Okay. And I want you to know there haven’t been any other guys in and out of Finn’s life. I haven’t dated.”
“At all?”
“Not enough to bring anyone home to meet Finn.”
“Did he ask where I’d been? Why he was just now meeting me?”
“No. He was just happy to have a dad.”
“Good. Because I’m happy to be his dad. I hope I can be the dad he deserves.”
Joey went to J.T. and put a hand on his arm. “You’re going to be fine. Maybe even better than fine.”
“Great?”
She let go of his arm and took a step back. “Let’s not go that far. Not yet.”
“It might take me a while to get there.”
“I’m not worried about it.”
J.T. nodded toward the hallway. “We should…”
“Yeah.”
They went back to the living room where Finn was taking out each figure and standing them on the kitchen table.
Joey smiled. “Well, he’s happy.”
J.T. picked up the box of pasta lying on the counter. “I guess I should get this going.”
“Would you like me to do that for you?”
He scowled. “I know how to cook pasta.”
“Okay. Fine. I’ll just sit here and play with Wonder Woman.”
J.T. watched Joey and Finn for a moment as they held a conversation between Wonder Woman and Batman. How did it all feel so right so quickly?
Chapter twenty-two
"I was the coolest Christmas angel ever."
Jake spent most of the night tossing and turning. The first week of June was bad for him. With today being the worst of it. He hoped he didn’t keep Ember awake all night. When she rolled over and threw an arm around him, he turned his head to look at her.
