Joey sniffed the air. “What is that wonderful smell?”

“That would be dinner.”

“You cook?”

“Sure. Of course.” She raised an eyebrow, and he sighed. “Fine. I don’t cook much. Granddad made spaghetti sauce for us. I just need to cook the pasta.”

“That was nice of him.”

“He didn’t want me serving you grilled cheese sandwiches or a can of chicken noodle soup.”

Joey laughed. “That would’ve been fine, too.”

Finn smiled. “I like chicken noodle soup.”

“Well, maybe next time we’ll have that.” He went to the table and retrieved the box of toys. “Look what I found in my closet.” He set the box in front of Finn.

“Wow! Cool. Can I play with them?”

“Yes, of course. My brother and I used to play with them.”

Joey smiled at J.T. “I remember those toys. You had them in your bedroom until you were sixteen.”

“Yeah. But I hadn’t played with them since I was ten. Maybe twelve.”

Joey watched Finn dig through the box for a moment, then looked at J.T. “Can I get a tour of the rest of the place?”

“There’s not much else to see.”

“Then it shouldn’t take long.”

He sighed, then pointed at the kitchen. “That’s the kitchen.”

She nodded. “And what would I find in your cupboards if I opened them?”

“A couple cans of chicken noodle soup. I usually eat with the family. Hard to pass up granddad’s cooking.”

“I guess it is.”

J.T. nodded toward the hallway. “And down there is the bedroom and bathroom.”

Joey smiled, then started walking down the hallway. “Well, I have to check that out.”

“You’re nosy.”

She kept going, and he followed her. She stopped inside the bedroom door and looked around. “Very neat.”

“I made the bed just for you.” When she smiled at him again, he added, “Because I knew you couldn’t help but snoop.”

“It’s very minimalistic.”

“It’s temporary. Most of my stuff is still in the loft.”

“I loved the loft. When you moved in there halfway through senior year…”

“Yeah. We ah…” He glanced over his shoulder toward the living room. “Well, you know what we did there on several occasions.”

“Yes, I do.”
