Finn laughed. “That’d be cool.”

“I don’t know about that. Not if you had to ride him. Actually, I’ve trained a horse or two who wouldn’t have surprised me if they blew fire at me.”

Joey turned her head and looked at him. “Saint?”

He looked at her. “You remember him?”

“Yes. He nearly killed your father.”

“He was so wrongly named. He should’ve been called Satan.”

“Hewasblack. What happened to him?”

“Dad and Granddad finally got him to take a saddle. But he was never good around the cows. They finally sold him.”

“So, he’s blowing fire at someone else now?”

“Last I heard, some rodeo guy was using him for bulldogging on the professional circuit.”

“Even though he didn’t like cows?”

“Maybe he’s alright chasing just one and seeing it get hogtied.”

They spent another hour on the hill, then headed back for the house. It had been a perfect day and Joey didn’t want it to end. Next was dinner with the whole family. She’d now seen everyone but Aunt Genny. But Genny had always been nice to her. Of course, she was also fiercely protective of her nephews and niece. Genny may not be too happy with her now.

They reached the barn and J.T. got down, then lifted Finn to the ground. “So, what do you think? Did you have fun today?”

“It was the best.” He hugged J.T.’s legs. “When can we go again?”

J.T. laughed. “Maybe in a couple of days. I still have some fence line to check out. But one more day should do it.”

“Will you be going by yourself since Sawyer will be gone?”

“I think Sage wants to come.”

“Is that a problem?”

“No. No problem. I just don’t want to camp out with her. So, we need to get it done in one day.”

“Why don’t you like to camp with her?”

“She’s—” He stopped when Sage came out of the barn.

“I’m what?”

“We have to bring so much more crap. Sawyer and I just need a tent, a sleeping bag and a couple cans of food.”

Sage shook her head and smiled at Joey. “He’s exaggerating. I don’t think we should have to rough it like our ancestors did. A foam pad. A pot to cook in. I don’t think that’s asking too much.”

Joey laughed. “An extra blanket?”

“Yeah. A roll of toilet paper. Not excessive, right?”

J.T. shook his head. “Why don’t you ladies go on to the house? Finn and I will put the horses away.”

They left and J.T. looked at Finn. “Okay. Let me show you how to put these guys away.”

They went into the barn and J.T. loosened the cinch and removed the saddle from Pablo. “Grab that blanket.”
