“I’m sure they’d love to.”

“Okay. When Sawyer gets back.”

“I’ll see you in a few days.” He waved at Finn through the car window. “See you soon.”

Finn waved back. “Bye, Dad.”

J.T. put a hand on his heart. “That just destroys me.”

Joey smiled. “I’m glad.” She shook her head. “Not that it destroys you. I’m glad he’s that comfortable with you already.”

“Me too.”

She took a breath. “Okay. Time to go. I’ll see you.”

“Goodnight, Josephina.”

Chapter twenty-five

"How big is big?"

Checking the rest of the fence line took longer than expected and by the end of the day, it was clear they’d need to go back out the next day. They weren’t prepared to stay the night. So J.T. and Sage rode home after a long day, then headed back out the next morning.

They got home mid-afternoon on the second day, and J.T. hoped to go check in with Joey and Finn, but Jake had news about an impending storm.

Jake was sitting on the porch with a pre-dinner beer and J.T. joined him with a bottle of his own.

Jake took a sip, then set his bottle down. “I guess you should’ve spent the night out last night.”

“I thought we’d get it all done yesterday. Besides…”

“You didn’t want to camp with your sister.”

“Yeah. She’s a bit of a camping diva.”

Jake laughed. “Well, you got back just in time. There’s a big storm headed our way. It should hit Friday night and continue through Sunday. With the worst of it coming on Saturday.”

“How big is big?”

“We’re looking at three to four inches of rain. Lots of wind. Thunder. Lightning.”

“Shit. So what do we need to do?”

“I think we should move the hay into the barn. If the wind blows the wrong way, it’s liable to soak at least the first few rows.”

“Okay. I can get on that tomorrow.”

“And the pond will probably overflow, so we should sandbag the east end so we don’t lose too many fish trying to swim into the shallow water. And I’m sure I’m going to get a call from Genny. She’s going to worry about her birds in the rain. Even though most of them are water birds.”

“Right. When is Sawyer coming back?”

“His fight is on Friday. So he won’t be here until after the storm. Unless he decides to stay, of course. I never know for sure what he’s going to do. We also need to make sure the camp is ready for next week. Hopefully, it won’t be too muddy for the kids. Might need to let it dry out a few days before we bring the horses over.”

“At least Sage is done with her classes.”

“Yeah. She’ll be able to check the camp herself. And I think Ray is going to help her tomorrow and Friday.”

J.T. smiled. “Poor Ray. He has it bad for Sage.”
