Jake shook his head. “She’s trying to navigate that situation with as much tactfulness as she can.”

“I don’t know if Ray really understands tact.”

Jake nodded. “Hopefully he won’t get his heart broken too badly.”

“I guess we all have to go through it.”

“Speaking of broken hearts. How’s it going with Joey?”

J.T. shook his head. “I haven’t seen her since Saturday. I wanted to get Finn on a horse in the round pen, but now it’ll have to wait until after the storm.”

“How’s her roof?”

“The Merrill brothers were scheduled to come take a look at it. I’m not sure when that was going to happen, though. I guess I should call her and see.”

“I don’t really want you up on her roof.”

“Don’t worry about that. I’ve got no plans to climb up there. Too steep for me. I’ll just make sure she knows the storms coming, and she’s prepared for it.”

“Finn seems to be fitting in with the family.”

“Yeah. He’s a good kid. And you all being so great about the situation has helped. I know it’s probably not easy to forget what Joey did.”

“Harder for you, son.”

“Yeah. But I’m dealing with it.”

“Good. You don’t have to deal with it alone, you know.”

“I know. Thanks, Dad.”

After dinner, J.T. went home to call Joey. He was too tired to see Finn tonight. But maybe he could squeeze in a visit before the storm hit. He dialed her number.

“Hello?”

“Hi. It’s me. J.T.”

“You’re on my contact list, J.T. I even gave you your own ringtone.”

“Hmm. What is it?” He tried to think about what she’d consider an appropriate ringtone for him. Or possibly an inappropriate one.

“I’m not going to tell you that.”

He shook his head. “Great.”

“It’s not bad.”

He leaned back on the couch and put his feet on the table. “I’m sorry I’ve been out of touch. It took two days to finish with the fence line.”

“Did you have to camp with Sage?”

He smiled. “No. We came home last night and went back out this morning.”

“You must be exhausted.”

“Yeah. I was wondering if I could come by tomorrow evening and see Finn?”

“Um…he’d love that. But I have dinner with my dad tomorrow. He wants an update on my progress here.”
