“It’s only a matter of time before she finds me.” He smiled at Ember and started walking again. While it’d be nice for someone to find him. He’d be a little disappointed if he had a girlfriend. He was rather enjoying Ember’s company.

They arrived at an older Toyota, and Ember held out her arms. “This is it.”

“And you have faith it’s going to make the trip to Schaeffer Mills?”

“Of course. It’s only got a hundred and seventy-five thousand miles on it. It runs great.”

“Hmm. Okay. If you say so.”

“Are you a car snob?”

“I don’t think so. I was just asking.”

Ember opened the driver’s side door. “Tabitha is very reliable.”

“Tabitha?” He sat down beside her in the car.

“Yes. That’s her name.” She patted the steering wheel, then looked at John. “Your girlfriend, Amanda, probably drives a BMW.”

“Nah. Mercedes.”

“Right. Of course.”

He fastened his seatbelt. “The bastards who coldcocked me are probably driving it around town right now.”

“Do you think there was more than one?”

“I hope so. It’d be pretty humiliating to betaken down by one bad guy.”

She laughed. “Maybe he was a really big bad guy.”

He shook his head. “At least two.”

“And you think these two, really big guys, stole your car?”

“They took my keys. I assume they took whatever I was driving.”

“I hope they catch them.”

“I’ll probably never know one way or the other.”

After they stopped for a burger, they spent the next two hours talking about random things on the drive. Ember didn’t want to push him into trying to remember anything. She had no idea how to help someone with amnesia, but she figured the best way would be to keep him calm and not constantly thinking about the fact he couldn’t remember.

The further they got out of the city, the more he seemed to relax. The country apparently agreed with him. Staying with Scott might be the perfect thing for John Sherlock.

As they rose in elevation, the grass and brush turned into oaks and then into pines. They were almost to Schaeffer Mills. It sat in a valley on the other side of the pass they were driving over. Scott’s place was on the far side of town, nestled in the trees on five acres next to a lake. The fishing was good and there was a great swimming hole a half-mile down the shoreline.

As they entered the town, John looked around. “This is a cute little town.”

“Yeah. I’ve always liked it. Lots of fond memories here. We used to come up here during the summer and rent a cabin on the lake. Scott always said someday he’d have his own place up here. Now he does.”

“What does Scott do when he’s not here?”

“He’s a high school math teacher and assistant football coach.”

“So, why isn’t he teaching right now?”

“It’s June.”
