“So where’s that leave me then?”

“We’ll keep your case open. Your photo will be regularly cross-referenced with the missing persons database. Stay in touch with the department and make sure we have your contact information. If something changes, let us know.”

“Okay.”

“Where you headed?”

Ember spoke up. “We’re going to my brother’s house in Schaeffer Mills. I’ll call tomorrow with the address and phone number.”

“Thank you.” He offered his hand to John. “Good luck to you.”

“Thanks. I think I’m going to need it.”

They rode the elevator down to the lobby, then went outside. John stopped walking and took a moment to breathe in some fresh air.

“I didn’t realize how stuffy it was in there until I got out here.”

She looked at him. “You look like you spend time outdoors. Maybe you’re a golfer. Or a runner. Maybe you like to swim.”

He looked at his boots. “Maybe I like to ride horses.”

She cocked her head. “A cowboy? I don’t get that vibe from you.”

“There’s a cowboy vibe?”

“Oh, definitely. Every year the rodeo comes to town and we get the cowboys coming through the ER. And some of them come up to the second floor. You’re definitely not a cowboy.”

John scowled. “I just like to wear very expensive boots?”

“You’re probably a weekend cowboy.”

“What’s that?”

“You like to dress the part, but have never actually been on a horse.”

He started walking again. “I hope not. That makes me sound like an asshole.”

“I’m pretty sure you’re not one of those, either.”

He stopped walking again. “If you had to guess. Just by looking at me. What would you say I do for a living?”

She studied him for a long moment. “I’d say you’re a businessman.”

“That’s pretty vague.”

She shrugged. “Probably something you started. An entrepreneur.”

“Maybe I’m a boot salesman and I got an employee discount on these boots.”

Ember laughed. “That’s probably it. Or maybe they were a gift from your very wealthy girlfriend.”

“You think I have a wealthy girlfriend?”

“You might. You never know.”

“If that’s true, then she can afford to hire someone to find me.”

“Yes. Let’s hope for that. Your wealthy girlfriend named…Amanda Worthington, already has someone searching high and low for you.”
